Usually, no. To receive cryptocurrency itself, you generally need a compatible wallet or exchange deposit route—not a bank account. A bank account may be necessary only if the chosen service converts the transfer to local currency and pays it into a bank. Depending on the provider and country, other payout options may include cash pickup or mobile money.
First decide what “receive” means
A crypto remittance can end at two different places. The right answer about a bank account depends on which one the sender and recipient intend to use.
Crypto sent to a wallet or exchange
For a direct on-chain transfer, the recipient supplies a compatible wallet address or exchange deposit details. The asset and blockchain must both be supported by that destination. Remitly’s U.S. terms, for example, describe sending a supported stablecoin to a digital asset wallet; the sender must choose the blockchain and use the address designated for that asset and network. Bank details are not needed simply to receive the on-chain crypto. Remitly’s U.S. terms
Local currency paid out by a provider
Some remittance services or their agents handle conversion or settlement and deliver local currency instead of placing crypto in the recipient’s wallet. The endpoint might be a bank account, mobile-money wallet, cash pickup, or another supported transaction account. The BIS Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures describes both a recipient opening a stablecoin wallet and an agent disbursing cash or crediting a transaction account; the available route depends on the service and local payment infrastructure. What to check before someone sends crypto
- Supported asset and network: Confirm the destination accepts the exact cryptocurrency and blockchain the sender plans to use. An address for one network may not work for the same asset on another network.
- Exact destination details: Copy the address and any required deposit information from the receiving wallet or exchange. Remitly warns that incorrect recipient information can prevent delivery and lead to irreversible loss. A submitted transfer also cannot be reversed while pending network confirmation; the receiving provider may require additional confirmations before showing it. Remitly’s U.S. terms
- Identity or transfer-origin checks: Not needing a bank account does not mean a transfer is anonymous or free of checks. Coinbase’s India guidance says recipients may be asked for sender details, including a full name, country, identification number, and address or other identifying information. Its Australia guidance says, effective 1 July 2026, external-wallet transfers can be held until required originator details are collected. These are examples of provider- and jurisdiction-specific controls, not universal wallet rules. Coinbase India guidance; Coinbase Australia guidance
- How the recipient will spend it: If the goal is local currency rather than holding crypto, verify that the provider supports cash-out in the recipient’s country and check the available payout methods, fees, exchange rate, limits, and timing before confirming.
Why the country and provider change the answer
Crypto receipt may be available without local bank cash-out
Coinbase says customers in its crypto-only markets can send and receive supported crypto on-chain, but cannot deposit local fiat or cash out to a local bank account or card through Coinbase. Availability depends on country, Coinbase entity, and local regulations, so this is an example of one provider’s coverage—not a rule for all crypto services. Coinbase crypto-only markets
A non-bank wallet can still offer local payout routes
NALA describes its USD Wallet as a remittance wallet, not a bank account. Its terms require identity and source-of-funds information for access, and withdrawals may use supported local channels such as bank accounts or mobile-money wallets, subject to laws and operational availability. That illustrates the distinction between the type of account a person holds and the local channel used to withdraw money. NALA terms

Choosing a bank payout makes bank details relevant
Binance’s Money Transfer FAQ, updated 17 April 2026, describes a route that pays out to a Mexican bank account in MXN. Its stated workflow asks for the beneficiary bank name and CLABE, and includes a CURP verification step when adding a new payee. The FAQ listed a 23 MXN fee and a 50–999,999 MXN transfer range at that update; these are details for that specific route and may change, so check the current app before using it. Binance Money Transfer FAQ
Compare the route, not just the transfer fee
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Endpoint | Will the recipient get crypto in a wallet, or local currency through a bank, mobile-money account, cash pickup, or another channel? |
| Availability | Does the provider support both countries, the asset, and the intended payout method? |
| Compatibility | Does the receiving wallet or exchange support the particular asset and blockchain? |
| Verification | What identity, sender, wallet-ownership, or source-of-funds information may be required? |
| Cost and timing | What network, service, exchange-rate, and payout costs apply, and when can the recipient use the funds? |
| Error handling | What happens if the address, network, or payout details are wrong, and can the transfer be recalled? |
Practical answer
If the recipient wants crypto in a compatible wallet or exchange account, a bank account is usually unnecessary. If the recipient wants the remittance delivered as local currency, a bank account is needed only when the chosen payout route requires one; another supported method may be available. Confirm the exact route and details with the provider before sending, because receiving crypto does not by itself guarantee a way to cash it out locally.
