For an occasional ¿ or ¡, Character Viewer is the easier route if you do not know the mapping: search for the character and click it to insert. There is no single Mac shortcut for these marks that Apple documents as universal across keyboard layouts.
Which method should you use?

This is a workflow choice, not a measured speed comparison: Apple’s guidance describes how to use the tools but does not report comparative typing times or error rates.
Find the punctuation keys for your active layout
Keyboard Viewer shows your selected keyboard layout. It can also show what keys produce when you hold modifier keys such as Option and Shift, so use it to confirm the exact key for ¿ and ¡ before memorizing a shortcut. Apple’s instructions are in Use the Keyboard Viewer on Mac.
- Open the Input menu in the menu bar and choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
- If the Input menu is not visible, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit, then enable Show Input menu in menu bar.
- In Keyboard Viewer, press Option, Shift, or both to inspect the alternate outputs. Confirm which key produces each punctuation mark for the selected input source.
Apple’s reviewed instructions do not specify one physical-key recipe for ¿ and ¡ that works across all Mac layouts. A shortcut found for one layout should not be assumed to work on another.

Insert ¿ or ¡ with Character Viewer
Character Viewer lets you search for symbols by name or code, then click a result to insert it. Apple documents these ways to open it:
- Press Control-Command-Space.
- On supported keyboards, press Fn-E or Globe-E. Apple’s shortcut reference also lists Fn-Fn on supported keyboards.
- Choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols in an app.
In the viewer, search for “inverted question mark” or “inverted exclamation mark,” or search for the character itself, then click the result to add it to your text. If a keyboard shortcut is unavailable on your keyboard or its Fn/Globe key is configured differently, use the menu route. Use a Spanish input source if it suits your typing
If you frequently write Spanish and want a layout designed for it, add or select a Spanish input source, then inspect its key outputs in Keyboard Viewer rather than relying on a shortcut from another layout. Apple explains how to manage input sources in Change Input Sources settings on Mac.
With multiple input sources enabled, Apple lists Control-Space and Control-Option-Space for switching between them. These shortcuts change the active source; they do not type Spanish punctuation directly. Use the Input menu to select your previous source again when needed.

Accented letters are a separate task
For accented letters such as á or ñ, macOS also offers press-and-hold accent menus and dead-key combinations. These are not punctuation shortcuts, and Apple notes that accent menus are not available in every app. See Enter characters with accent marks on Mac.
