To send money internationally with XRP, the sender needs a way to buy XRP and send it over the XRP Ledger, and the recipient needs a supported way to convert or spend it. An on-ledger payment transfers XRP between ledger accounts; it does not, by itself, deliver local currency. The available providers, fees and cash-out options depend on the countries involved.

Before you start: check that the route works

Confirm both ends of the transfer before buying XRP. The sender needs to be able to acquire XRP and withdraw it on XRP Ledger Mainnet. The recipient needs an exchange, payment service or other practical way to receive, convert or spend it. A fast ledger transfer cannot solve a missing cash-out option.

Provider availability and legal requirements vary by country. No single provider or route is established for every sender-recipient corridor, so check the services available in the actual countries and their current XRP withdrawal and payout terms.

How to send an XRP remittance

  1. Check acquisition and cash-out. Verify that the sender can buy XRP and withdraw it using XRP Ledger Mainnet, and that the recipient can access or convert the XRP. A wallet may not sell XRP; in that case, the sender may need a third-party exchange or another person to fund the account.
  2. Set up an XRPL account. Choose a wallet that lets you manage funds and interact with the XRP Ledger. XRPL accounts must meet a minimum reserve requirement to become active; check the wallet or current ledger documentation for the requirement that applies. Keep account credentials and signing access secure.
  3. Confirm the destination. Ask the recipient for the correct XRP Ledger address and verify it carefully. If withdrawing from an exchange, select XRP Ledger Mainnet—not a similarly named network—and follow any additional destination instructions the service requires. A direct XRP Payment needs a funded sending account, valid transaction fields and signatures, sufficient balance, and a destination account different from the sender’s.
  4. Review the transaction fee, then sign. XRP Ledger documentation lists a standard minimum transaction cost of 10 drops before load scaling. The protocol destroys this fee; it is not paid to a transfer intermediary. Network load can raise the cost. Check the displayed fee immediately before signing: once signed, the transaction’s Fee cannot be changed without invalidating the signature.
  5. Submit and verify both ends. XRP Ledger documentation says a direct XRP payment typically completes in eight seconds or less. That is the ledger payment, not the entire remittance: buying XRP, exchange withdrawal, conversion and fiat payout can take additional time. Check the final ledger result, then confirm separately that the recipient’s service has credited the XRP or made funds available.

What fees affect the recipient’s final amount?

The 10-drop standard minimum is a protocol-level starting point, not the all-in price of an international remittance. Depending on the route, costs can include the sender’s fiat-to-XRP spread or trading fee, deposit and withdrawal charges, XRP price movement before conversion, the recipient’s conversion spread, payout charges and other provider or intermediary fees. The cited sources do not provide current prices for specific providers, so a total cost or claim that XRP is cheaper for a particular corridor cannot be established without comparing live quotes.

For covered U.S. remittance transfers, the CFPB compliance guide identifies disclosure details that can help compare outcomes: the amount paid, provider fees and taxes, exchange rate, amount to be received in the recipient’s currency, and certain covered third-party fees. Which rules and disclosures apply depends on the provider and transfer. Use the relevant quote and disclosures to compare the actual route, rather than treating the ledger fee as the total charge.

Direct XRP payment or cross-currency payment?

Payment type What moves on-ledger What to assess
Direct XRP payment XRP moves from one XRP Ledger account to another in a direct Payment transaction. The recipient gets XRP, not automatically local fiat. Conversion or spending depends on a separate supported service or option.
Cross-currency payment The payment can send one currency and deliver another on-ledger; at least one side must be a non-XRP token. A viable path and sufficient liquidity are required. The source cost can vary, and this is not a guarantee of an external provider’s fiat payout.

XRPL pathfinding can use order books and automated market makers; XRP may serve as a bridge between two tokens when that route reduces cost. The available path and cost can change before execution. Liquidity, exchange rates, automated-market-maker fees and token-issuer transfer fees can affect the amount spent. For cross-currency payments, the Payment reference describes SendMax as a way to cap the source amount, including transfer fees, exchange rates and slippage. Review the path and source limit before signing.

XRP Ledger documentation describes cross-currency payments as atomic: the on-ledger payment fully executes or none of it does. Atomic execution does not remove the need to check the route, or ensure that a separate off-ledger cash-out will succeed.

Risks to consider

  • Price movement: XRP’s value in fiat can change between purchase and conversion, affecting the amount the recipient ultimately receives.
  • Wrong address or network: A mistaken destination or withdrawal on the wrong network can prevent the intended transfer. Verify the address and network with the recipient and sending service before signing.
  • Insufficient liquidity or a changing path: A cross-currency payment may not execute if there is not enough liquidity, and its cost can change between pathfinding and execution. Check the proposed path and any source-amount limit.
  • Uncertain cash-out: Ledger settlement alone does not establish that the recipient can convert XRP into local currency. Confirm the recipient’s access to a suitable service for the specific corridor.
  • Different legal and consumer protections: CFPB materials address U.S. remittance disclosures and market context; they do not establish that a particular XRP route is available, covered or protected in every jurisdiction.
