To change spacing throughout a desktop document, choose Design > Paragraph Spacing > No Paragraph Space. Paragraph spacing is separate from line spacing, so changing one will not necessarily fix the other.
First, identify which spacing is creating the gap
If the extra space appears after a paragraph and before the next one, change paragraph spacing. Word controls it with the paragraph’s Before and After values. If the lines are too far apart within the same paragraph, change Line spacing instead. Microsoft explains these as separate settings in its line-spacing guidance and paragraph indents and spacing guidance.
Remove paragraph spacing in Word for Windows
Change spacing in selected paragraphs
- Select the paragraphs you want to fix. To affect the entire document, select all its text first.
- On the Home tab, open Line and Paragraph Spacing, then choose Line Spacing Options.
- In the Paragraph dialog’s Spacing area, reduce Before and After. Set the value responsible for the gap to 0 pt if you want to remove that added spacing.
- Select OK.
Some desktop layouts also let you open the Paragraph dialog from the dialog launcher in the Paragraph group, then use the Indents and Spacing tab. See Microsoft’s spacing instructions.
Remove added spacing throughout the document
For a quick whole-document change, choose Design > Paragraph Spacing > No Paragraph Space. This preset changes the current style set’s spacing. If you want to restore the prior appearance, return to Design > Paragraph Spacing and select the previous style set. Alternatively, select all text and set the paragraph spacing values directly. Microsoft documents both approaches in its guidance on changing spacing between paragraphs and setting single spacing as the default.

Change paragraph spacing on Mac
For selected paragraphs, select them, then open Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing > Line Spacing Options. In the Paragraph dialog’s Spacing section, adjust Before or After and select OK. To apply a preset to the document, choose Design > Paragraph Spacing > No Paragraph Space. The available controls and steps are described in Microsoft’s Word spacing guidance.
Change paragraph spacing in Word for the web
- Switch to Editing view if Word is not already in it.
- Select the paragraph or paragraphs you want to change.
- Open Layout and use the Before and After spacing controls in the Paragraph group.
- Type a value or use the arrows to reduce the spacing.
This changes paragraph spacing for the selected text. Microsoft’s instructions are at Change spacing between paragraphs and Adjust indents and spacing.

What to expect on Word mobile
Mobile controls depend on the device. On some platforms, select the text and open Home > Line & Paragraph Spacing, then choose Remove Space Before Paragraph or Remove Space After Paragraph as appropriate. Microsoft notes that Word for iPhone and iPad does not provide special before-and-after paragraph-spacing options beyond changing line spacing. Check the available controls in the app for your device; see Microsoft’s mobile spacing instructions.
If the gap remains or returns
Only certain paragraphs still look different
Check the Before and After values on the specific paragraphs that still have a gap, along with the styles applied to them. In the Paragraph dialog, Don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style can also affect how spacing appears. These controls are covered in Microsoft’s paragraph spacing guidance.

New documents have the same spacing
Desktop Word lets you save spacing settings as defaults using Set as Default for documents based on the Normal template. Microsoft also documents setting single spacing as the default at Set single space as the default and changing default line spacing at Change the default line spacing. Word for the web reverts to 1.15 line spacing for the next new document after a line-spacing change, according to that default-spacing guidance.
A preset changed more of the document than expected
No Paragraph Space overrides the spacing in the current style set. To undo that preset, select the previous style set from Design > Paragraph Spacing; Microsoft describes this behavior in its default spacing instructions.

Why Word can show a gap even with single line spacing
Line spacing and paragraph spacing are independent. Microsoft states that Word’s default line spacing is 1.15 and that paragraphs are followed by a blank line by default; these are software defaults, not a guarantee that every document or style uses those settings. If single line spacing still leaves a visible gap between paragraphs, inspect Before and After rather than changing line spacing alone. See Microsoft’s default line-spacing guidance.
