To free up Chromebook storage, first check which categories are using space: open Settings > System preferences > Storage management. Then remove only files, offline copies, apps, or local accounts you no longer need. Back up important files before deleting them; a Chromebook running low on space may automatically remove some downloaded files or other data.

Find what is using Chromebook storage

  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Under System preferences, select Storage management.
  4. Review the categories shown and start with a large category you can safely reduce.

Depending on your ChromeOS version, categories may include Downloads, Offline files, Browsing data, Android storage, and Other users. Google describes possible effects of low storage as trouble downloading files, loading webpages, saving settings such as passwords, adding users, or using Android apps. It also warns that some downloaded files, browsing data, cache, or unused accounts might be deleted automatically; this is possible behavior, not a guaranteed sequence. See Google’s Chromebook storage guidance.

Review Downloads and local files

The Downloads folder is stored on the Chromebook by default. Open the Files app and check Downloads for large or old items before deleting anything. You can sort or search to find files, and ChromeOS lets you change the download destination or choose where each file is saved. Google explains these options in its Files app guide.

  • Keep the file: Move or save it to Google Drive or compatible external storage first, then verify that the copy is accessible.
  • Do not need the file: Delete it from Files. Most deleted files go to Trash and are permanently deleted after 30 days; restore them from Trash before then if needed.
  • Want to empty Trash: Confirm you have a usable backup before permanently deleting its contents.

Choose cleanup options by their impact

Option What it can free Trade-off to consider
Delete selected Downloads Local files you no longer need Narrow impact when you check each file; deleted items in Trash are permanently removed after 30 days.
Clear selected browsing data Browser data, including selected site data or download history Removing cookies and site data can erase stored site information, application caches, and web storage. Deletion may also affect other devices and your Google Account when you are signed in.
Uninstall unused apps Apps that are no longer needed Google says removed apps can be downloaded again.
Remove an extra local user Files stored locally for that account Those local files are removed. The Google Account itself and connected information such as bookmarks are not deleted.
Clear Drive offline copies Files saved on the Chromebook for offline use Those files may no longer be available without an internet connection; some may remain offline after cleanup.

Clear browsing data selectively

In Chrome’s delete-browsing-data controls, choose a time range and the specific data types to remove rather than clearing everything by default. Browser cookies and site data can include web storage and application caches, so clearing them may sign you out or affect information stored by websites. If you are signed in, Google says deleting selected browsing data can remove it from other devices and your Google Account as well. For details, see Google’s instructions for deleting Chrome browsing data.

Uninstall apps or remove a local account only when appropriate

Uninstall apps you no longer use. Before removing an extra user from the Chromebook, make sure you have copied any local files that person needs. Removing the local account does not delete that person’s Google Account, but its files stored on the Chromebook are removed. Google lists both actions among its recommended ways to free space.

Free space used by offline Google Drive files

Drive files made available offline take up device storage. To stop new files from being stored for offline use, open Settings > System preferences > Google Drive and turn off Access your Google Drive files when you’re offline. To remove offline data, use Clean up storage in the same settings area. Google cautions that some files may remain available offline afterward, and offline access may turn off automatically when device storage is low. See Google’s Chromebook offline Drive instructions.

Check Linux storage before removing Linux data

If you use Linux on your Chromebook, check Storage management to see whether Linux files or apps are contributing to the space problem. Do not delete Linux data unless you know you no longer need it. A Linux backup and restore can itself use a lot of disk space, so allow for that when planning a backup. Google’s Linux backup and restore guidance explains the process.

Move files to Drive or external storage

Moving files off the Chromebook can preserve them while reclaiming local space. Google Drive is convenient when you have internet access and enough Google Account storage; external storage keeps the files on a removable device and does not depend on cloud access. Chromebook-compatible options can include USB flash drives, external hard drives, SD cards, and microSD cards, but support depends on the device and ChromeOS version. Check compatibility before relying on a drive, and safely eject it before unplugging. Google lists supported options in its external storage compatibility guide.
