Yes—many people can continue using classic Outlook for Windows, and Microsoft documents ways to switch back from new Outlook or install classic Outlook if it is missing. Whether you can use a particular edition depends on your Outlook product and license, account type, and, on a work or school device, your organization’s settings. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one final cutoff date for every user.
How do you switch back to classic Outlook?
If new Outlook has opened and you want classic Outlook, Microsoft provides two choices. In new Outlook, select the toggle for switching to classic Outlook and choose the option that fits what you need. Microsoft’s switch instructions describe both options.
- Switch back to classic Outlook: Changes the behavior for later launches so classic Outlook can open again.
- Use classic Outlook this time: Opens classic Outlook now, while leaving the current redirection behavior in place for subsequent launches.
The labels or availability of the toggle may vary with your account, Outlook edition, and organization settings.
What if classic Outlook is missing from your Windows PC?
Many new Windows devices sold since 2024 have new Outlook preinstalled without classic Outlook. Microsoft provides a download for installing or reinstalling classic Outlook from its publisher website. Having the app installer does not by itself establish that you have a license to use every Outlook or Office edition; check the product associated with your account and its terms. Will Microsoft automatically move you to new Outlook?
Not necessarily. Microsoft describes automatic-switch notices and switch experiences for specified groups, including some users with personal Microsoft accounts and Microsoft 365 Business users on the Current Channel. It also identifies scenarios that may not receive the automatic switch or toggle, including some enterprise, unsupported-account, standalone, or one-time-purchase situations. Eligibility can depend on the precise account, plan, edition, support status, and administrator settings. Check the switch options in your Outlook or ask your organization’s administrator. What features might you lose by switching?
Check the workflows you depend on against Microsoft’s feature comparison for new and classic Outlook. The matrix uses labels such as available, partially available, unsupported, and upcoming. It is updated over time and is not exhaustive, so verify the specific feature rather than assuming that a broad category works the same in both apps.

- VBA macros: The matrix lists VBA macros as available in classic Outlook and unsupported in new Outlook.
- Add-ins and other features: Check the current matrix for the specific add-in or capability you need; availability may differ or change.
- Public folders: Microsoft says new Outlook has limited public-folder support. If you rely heavily on creating, modifying, or deleting public folders, Microsoft recommends continuing with classic Outlook. See Microsoft’s getting-started guidance.
Does offline access decide which version to use?
Not on its own. Microsoft documents offline capabilities for both versions. In new Outlook, offline access must be enabled; the app saves copies of email, calendar events, and people on the device. If you need to work without a connection, review Microsoft’s offline Outlook guidance and confirm that the behavior suits your version and setup.

The Microsoft pages cited here do not set one end date that applies to every Outlook edition, license, and user. To establish what applies to you, identify your Outlook product and license, account type, and any organization deployment rules, then consult the lifecycle or deployment guidance for that exact setup. A transition notice for a particular user group is not, by itself, a universal classic Outlook cutoff.
