Thin liquidity and fabricated activity can magnify moves, while sharp rallies may reverse. These forces make forecasts uncertain; the available evidence does not establish a dependable way to predict an individual meme coin’s price.
What drives meme coin prices?
Many meme coins have limited or no functionality, so their prices can depend heavily on how much buyers want them and what they expect others to pay later. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Corporation Finance described typical meme coin value as driven primarily by “market demand and speculation” in a staff statement dated February 27, 2025. The statement describes staff views; it does not determine the legal status of every coin or offering.
Online attention and promotion
Internet memes, current events, trends, and enthusiastic online communities can draw attention to a token and bring in prospective buyers. That attention may be brief or concentrated around a promotion, so visibility is not the same as durable demand.
A 2024 peer-reviewed study by Li and co-authors found a high correlation between Dogecoin’s price and Elon Musk’s activity on X in the case they examined. The study also covered Bitcoin and Ethereum; its Dogecoin finding is evidence about that case, not a rule that social posts predict prices for every meme coin.

Demand, speculation, and expectations
When a token’s practical uses are limited, buyers may be acting mainly on expectations that attention or demand will grow. If those expectations change, buying interest can fade just as quickly. Popularity may affect what people are willing to pay, but it does not by itself establish lasting underlying value.
Liquidity and trading depth
Liquidity is the ability to buy or sell without moving the price substantially. In a thin market, even a comparatively small order can cause a large displayed price change. A quoted price or reported trading volume does not show whether a holder could sell a large position at that price; the sale itself may push the price down.

The 2024 Li et al. study describes Dogecoin’s poor monetary liquidity as a condition that can enable price manipulation. This is a finding about the asset and analysis in that study, not proof that a particular price move in another token was manipulated.
How can apparent interest or price movement be misleading?
Visible activity can look like broad enthusiasm even when it does not reflect a diverse group of independent buyers. Research has documented several mechanisms in particular samples. Their existence is a reason to assess evidence carefully, not grounds to label an individual token or rally as manipulated without supporting evidence.

- Wash trading: trading designed to create the appearance of activity without representing equivalent genuine demand.
- Fabricated comments: false or coordinated online engagement that can make a token seem more popular.
- Concealed accumulation: acquiring tokens without making the accumulation obvious, potentially before selling into increased demand.
- Liquidity-pool price inflation: strategic purchases in a pool that can affect its displayed price without establishing that buyers can exit at that price.
A 2025 Zenodo preprint by Mongardini and Mei, A Midsummer Meme’s Dream, discusses manipulation mechanisms in its studied material. A separate 2025 UCL working paper by Ding and co-authors examines 6,000 Pump.fun coins and describes tactics in that setting. These are preprint and working-paper findings, respectively; they do not establish that every token or movement exhibits those behaviors.
Why can a meme coin rally reverse so quickly?
A price can rise as attention and buying increase, then fall when that interest weakens or holders sell. Thin liquidity can make the reversal sharper because available buyers may not be able to absorb selling at the previous price.

A 2025 study by Li, Shin, and Wang in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis describes crypto pump-and-dump episodes involving short-lived, dramatic increases in price, volume, and volatility followed by quick reversals. Its scope is cryptocurrency pump-and-dump schemes generally, not meme coins alone. It supports caution about sudden rallies; it does not show that every fast increase is a pump-and-dump.

Meme coins do not trade in isolation: shared investor sentiment and links across crypto markets can matter. A 2025 Finance Research Letters study, “Memecoin contagion: Irrationality, illicit behaviour, and Cryptocurrency risk,” analyzed daily CoinMarketCap and LSEG Workspace data from January 1, 2019, through May 31, 2025. It reports spillovers and sentiment contagion in its analysis. That result describes a particular period and methodology; it is not a reliable signal of which way an individual coin’s price will move next.

Why are meme coin price predictions unreliable?
A forecast has to anticipate more than a chart pattern. It depends on fast-changing attention and expectations, how much trading depth is available, who holds the token, and whether visible activity reflects genuine demand. These factors can change abruptly or be difficult to observe. A recent rise, a burst of social activity, or a model’s output therefore cannot guarantee a future price.
It is also important to distinguish different kinds of evidence. A correlation observed in historical data, a method for detecting suspicious activity, and an analysis of contagion are not the same thing as a tested forecast for a particular token. The sources cited here do not establish a dependable individual-token forecasting method or a prospective accuracy rate. A confident prediction should be treated as an uncertain claim, not a reliable outcome.
How to assess a price move or prediction
Use these questions to examine a claim, not as a validated scoring system or investment checklist. The mechanisms behind them are discussed across the Dogecoin study, the Zenodo preprint, and the Pump.fun working paper.

| Ownership and timing | Are holders or insiders concentrated, and might early accumulation create selling pressure? |
| Evidence quality | Is the claim based on official material, peer-reviewed research, a preprint, a working paper, or promotion? Does the evidence actually cover this token and period? |
These questions can expose uncertainty and limits in a claim; they cannot remove the underlying uncertainty in a market driven by shifting demand and speculation.
