The disc-equipped Slim and original both play PS5 game discs; the key difference for digital buyers is that the Slim Digital Edition can take Sony’s separately sold detachable disc drive, while the original Digital Edition has no such option.
How much smaller and lighter is the PS5 Slim?
Sony’s published measurements show a smaller chassis in both like-for-like comparisons. The dimensions below exclude projecting parts, as specified in Sony’s 2023 Slim announcement; the figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

| Model | Dimensions | Mass |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 with disc drive (2020 launch specification) | Approx. 390 × 104 × 260 mm | 4.5 kg |
| PS5 Slim with disc drive (2023 announcement) | Approx. 358 × 96 × 216 mm | 3.2 kg |
| Original PS5 Digital Edition (2020 launch specification) | Approx. 390 × 92 × 260 mm | 3.9 kg |
| PS5 Slim Digital Edition (2023 announcement) | Approx. 358 × 80 × 216 mm | 2.6 kg |
For the disc-equipped models, the Slim is 32 mm shorter, 8 mm narrower and 44 mm shallower by these listed dimensions, and 1.3 kg lighter. Sony’s original launch specifications are in its 2020 PS5 launch announcement; the Slim figures come from its 2023 announcement.
Does the PS5 Slim have more storage?
Yes, in advertised internal SSD capacity: Sony listed 825 GB for the original PS5 at launch and 1 TB for the Slim models announced in 2023. These are manufacturer-advertised capacities, not the amount of free space available for games. Sony notes that some SSD capacity is reserved for system administration, maintenance and options, so usable space is lower and can vary.

What is different about the disc drives?
Original PS5
The original standard PS5 has an integrated Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. The original Digital Edition is digital-only; Sony did not offer the Slim’s detachable-drive arrangement for that model.
PS5 Slim
Sony announced the Slim in a drive-equipped configuration and as a Digital Edition. The Slim Digital Edition has a port for Sony’s separately sold detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. Confirm your console’s exact model group and the accessory’s compatibility listing before buying: Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive manual identifies supported console and disc formats. The accessory is for the Slim arrangement; it is not an add-on for the original PS5 Digital Edition.
Which model makes sense if you own physical games?
Count the discs you expect to use, not just the games you plan to buy next. Physical PS5 games and compatible PS4 Blu-ray games require a drive-equipped console or, for the Slim Digital Edition, the compatible detachable drive. A digital-only console requires digital downloads for those games.
Sony said in its 2020 PS5 FAQ that more than 99% of its 4,000+ PS4 games can be played on either PS5 console. Sony’s qualification matters: on the Digital Edition, those games must be downloaded; a drive-equipped PS5 also supports compatible PS4 Blu-ray discs. If you own a physical library or prefer buying discs, factor the drive configuration into the choice.

Does the Slim play games faster?
The cited Sony specifications and announcements establish differences in size, mass, storage capacity and drive configuration; they do not establish that the Slim runs games faster than the original PS5. Choose between them on the basis of those documented differences rather than assuming a performance upgrade.
