To make the iPhone Action button run multiple actions, create a shortcut in the Shortcuts app, add and arrange the actions, then assign that shortcut in Settings > Action Button > Shortcut > Choose a Shortcut. For a single press that should offer different tasks, start the shortcut with Choose from Menu and add a separate action sequence under each menu option.
Check that your iPhone has an Action button
This setup applies to supported iPhone models with an Action button. Apple’s iPhone guide identifies iPhone 15 Pro or later as supported; on those models, the Action button takes the place of the Ring/Silent switch. Check your exact model before following the steps, since not every iPhone has this button.
Create a shortcut with a fixed sequence of actions
A shortcut is a series of individual tasks that run in order. Apple describes each shortcut as being made up of one or more actions. For example, a shortcut might retrieve some content, transform it, and then share it. That get-transform-share pattern is useful guidance, not a requirement: choose actions that fit your task and leave out steps you do not need.
- Open Shortcuts. Create a new shortcut and give it a recognizable name.
- Add the actions. Search for the tasks you want, then add them to the shortcut. Each action is one step in the workflow.
- Arrange the actions. Put them in the order they need to run. A later action may depend on information produced by an earlier one.
- Test the shortcut. Run it in Shortcuts and respond to any access prompts for actions that use other apps. Some app actions need your permission before they can work.
- Assign it to the Action button. Open Settings > Action Button, swipe to Shortcut, tap Choose a Shortcut, and select the shortcut you created.
- Run it from the button. Press and hold the Action button. Apple notes that choosing a specific shortcut is required; if Shortcut is selected without a shortcut assignment, the button does nothing.
Choose between a fixed sequence and a menu
Use a fixed sequence when every press should run the same workflow. Use a menu when the press should ask which of several workflows to run. Both are shortcuts that you can assign to the Action button.

Make one press offer different actions
In Shortcuts, add Choose from Menu at the start of your shortcut, create an option for each task, and add that option’s actions beneath its menu marker. Apple describes the action as a way to decide what a shortcut should do when it runs. For example, a menu could offer “Start my day” and “Focus at work,” each with its own sequence. When you run the shortcut, choose an option; only the actions for that option run.
When to use Repeat actions
Repeat and Repeat with Each are loop actions: use them when you need to run a group of steps multiple times or once for each item in a list. They are not needed just because a shortcut contains several different actions. For an ordinary multi-step routine, add the actions in sequence; for alternative routines, use a menu.
