Start by checking each provider’s service availability at your exact address. Then compare latency for the activities you do, plan-specific speeds and data policies, and the equipment and installation the offer requires. A coverage map or advertised maximum speed cannot guarantee service or performance at a particular home.
1. Check availability at your exact address
Satellite internet coverage is not a blanket guarantee that every home in a broad service area can connect. Enter the service address in each provider’s availability tool and review the offer shown for that location. Hughesnet describes availability in the contiguous United States, Puerto Rico, and Alaska, subject to a clear view of the southern sky. Viasat says it serves most of the U.S. population and directs customers to check an address. Starlink’s map also asks for an address and notes that coverage or regulatory approval may still be pending.
These are provider descriptions, not proof that a specific roof or yard will work. A clear line of sight matters: trees, buildings, and other obstructions can affect where a terminal can be placed. The FCC also describes satellite broadband as requiring line of sight (FCC material, 2026).
2. Decide how much latency matters for your activities
Latency is the delay involved in a request traveling between your device, the satellite, and the network. It is different from download speed: a connection can download quickly but still feel less responsive in activities where timing matters.

Usually more tolerant of delay
Web browsing, email, video streaming, and many work tasks can be workable on satellite service. Actual results still depend on the plan, location, network conditions, and the application.
More sensitive to delay
Fast-paced multiplayer games and some VPN-dependent activities may be a poor fit. Viasat cautions that “Applications that require very low latency, such as fast-paced multiplayer online games and some VPN-dependent activities, may not perform as well on satellite internet.” (Viasat FAQ.) If these uses are essential, ask the provider about the service and plan available at your address rather than relying on a general speed claim.

Satellite systems are not all alike. The FCC describes Hughes/EchoStar and Viasat as using geostationary systems in North America, while Starlink uses a non-geostationary constellation (FCC satellite broadband overview). As context, Starlink lists 25–60 ms land latency for its fixed plans, while noting 100+ ms in certain remote locations; the FCC separately describes typical latency above 100 ms in remote Alaska locations (Starlink specification; FCC material, 2026). Those geographically qualified figures should not be generalized to every location or provider.
3. Compare plan-specific speeds, variability, and data terms
Compare the plan offered at your address, not just the largest number on a provider’s homepage. An “up to” speed is a ceiling claim, not a promise that a household will see that speed continuously. Providers qualify performance, and Starlink specifically says its stated speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed.

| Service detail | What the cited provider information says | How to use it when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink fixed plans | Standard: 25–100 Mbps download; Priority: 40–220 Mbps download. Starlink lists 25–60 ms latency for both. Its broader typical-user range is 25–220 Mbps download and 5–20 Mbps upload. Specification retrieved 2026; performance varies by location, time, and plan. (Starlink specification) | Keep plan ranges separate from the broader typical-user range. Check the plan actually offered and its service priority at your address. |
| Hughesnet Elite | Download speeds up to 100 Mbps; Hughesnet says speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed. (Hughesnet plans) | Treat “up to” as a stated maximum, not an expected minimum or guarantee. |
| Viasat | Speeds up to 25–150 Mbps in select areas; speeds vary. (Viasat plans) | Confirm which plan and speed range are available at the exact address. |
Data language also needs close reading. “Unlimited data” does not necessarily mean unlimited high-speed data or identical treatment during congestion.
- Viasat Essentials: 150 GB of high-speed data, followed by unlimited standard data that may be deprioritized. Viasat Unleashed: described as unlimited high-speed data, subject to policy qualifications. Check the current plan terms for the address (Viasat plans).
- Hughesnet: standard data is described as unlimited, but speeds may be slower during high-traffic periods (Hughesnet plans).
- Starlink: plan priority and network conditions can affect performance; review the current service specification and broadband label (Starlink specification).
Before ordering, read the current broadband label and plan policy for your address. Plan names, data rules, and performance information can change.

4. Confirm the equipment and installation will work at home
Satellite service requires a terminal or dish with an unobstructed view, plus indoor networking equipment. Check where equipment can be installed and what the offer includes before comparing costs.
Hughesnet
Hughesnet says it supplies the dish and Wi-Fi modem and uses professional installation: “Hughesnet provides all necessary equipment, including the Wi-Fi Modem and satellite dish.” (Hughesnet equipment FAQ.) Its instructions call for a clear view of the southern sky. Optional Mesh Wi-Fi Nodes can extend home coverage; confirm their current terms and compatibility with the offered setup (Hughesnet plans).

Starlink
Starlink defines its kit as the terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount required for service (Starlink specification). Verify the current kit and any equipment charges in the address-specific offer. The equipment description does not establish that a particular third-party listing is available or suitable.
Viasat
Check the address-specific plan details for equipment, installation, and any lease or purchase terms. The available offer can vary by address (Viasat plans).
For any provider, inspect the proposed placement for obstructions and ask what happens if the installer cannot find a suitable location. Compare the complete cost—including equipment, installation, taxes, promotions, and cancellation commitments—not just the monthly headline price.
5. Make the comparison using your household’s priorities
Once you know which services are offered at your address, use the questions below to rank them:
- Will installation be feasible? Confirm line of sight and a realistic equipment location.
- Does the latency suit your essential activities? Give greater weight to responsiveness if you rely on fast multiplayer gaming or latency-sensitive VPN work.
- Does the plan match your use? Compare plan-specific speed ranges, data rules, and what happens during congestion.
- What is the complete commitment? Confirm included hardware, installation, recurring charges, promotions, taxes, and cancellation terms in the current offer.
There is no directly comparable, current independent dataset establishing results for all three providers at the same locations and dates. Provider specifications and promotional speed ranges are not a head-to-head test. As historical context only, the FCC reported that Hughes and Starlink each served more than one million U.S. subscribers as of 2023; that is not a current subscriber count (FCC overview, 2024).
