Space debris can orbit Earth for years or centuries before atmospheric drag brings it down. When tracked objects are predicted to pass near an active spacecraft, operators assess the actual collision risk, coordinate as needed, and may maneuver or change the spacecraft’s attitude. At mission’s end, disposal steps help keep retired hardware from lingering or breaking apart in orbit.
What counts as space debris?
Space debris is human-made material in orbit that no longer serves a useful purpose. It includes defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, and fragments produced when objects break apart or collide. The amount in orbit depends on how it is counted: ESA’s Space Debris User Portal reported about 47,110 objects regularly tracked by space-surveillance networks as of 31 July 2026. Separately, ESA modeled populations of 1.5 million objects between 1 cm and 10 cm and 230 million between 1 mm and 1 cm, using a February 2026 reference population. The smaller-object figures are estimates, not counts of individually tracked objects. ESA Space Debris User Portal.
Does space debris eventually fall to Earth?
Some debris eventually reenters the atmosphere as its orbit decays, but it does not fall straight down as soon as it stops working. Atmospheric drag gradually reduces an object’s orbital energy, and the time this takes varies substantially with altitude and other orbital and object-specific conditions.
Why altitude matters
NASA’s debris FAQ says objects below 600 km normally return within several years, while decay at 800 km is often measured in centuries. Above 1,000 km, the FAQ gives an even longer estimate. These are broad guides, not guaranteed lifetimes for any individual object. NASA space debris FAQ.

What happens during reentry?
Reentry produces severe heating, and a significant amount of debris does not survive it. Some pieces can reach the ground; surviving material is more likely to land in oceans or sparsely populated areas than in populated places. The outcome for a particular object depends on its construction and reentry. For a planned disposal, operators may rely on natural orbital decay or use propulsion to create a steeper, more precisely targeted entry, generally aiming the expected debris footprint over an uninhabited region such as an ocean. How do spacecraft avoid collisions with debris?
Collision avoidance is a sequence of prediction, assessment, and—when justified—mitigation. A close-approach alert is a reason to evaluate the event, not proof that a collision is likely.

- Screen predicted orbits. NASA’s on-orbit conjunction process uses screenings by the U.S. Space Force’s 18th Space Defense Squadron, which drive NASA’s process three times a day. The screening checks predicted positions of a protected spacecraft against known objects. NASA Conjunction Assessment and Risk Analysis overview.
- Assess the event’s risk. Analysts consider the predicted encounter and its uncertainties to determine whether mitigation is warranted. A conjunction data message (CDM) contains predicted close-approach information, including states and uncertainties, but receiving a CDM does not by itself mean a collision is likely: risk still has to be assessed. NASA CARA overview; NASA conjunction assessment.
- Choose a response, if needed. Operators may make a propulsive maneuver, change a spacecraft’s attitude to reduce its frontal area or use differential drag, or share predicted orbit information so another operator can maneuver. They must also check the proposed trajectory for new close approaches, because avoiding one object can create a different conjunction. NASA conjunction mitigation.
Depending on the encounter and available options, the appropriate response may be no maneuver after reassessment, an attitude change, a maneuver by one operator, or coordinated action. These approaches differ in how they alter the trajectory, whether the spacecraft remains operational, potential fuel and mission-life costs, and the risk of creating another conjunction. Not every spacecraft has every option available.
What happens when a satellite reaches the end of its life?
End-of-mission planning aims to reduce the debris a spacecraft releases, limit accidental explosions and collision-related debris, and reduce the number and orbital lifetime of retired objects. NASA addresses mitigation in its directive NPR 8715.6E, effective 18 April 2024 and expiring 18 April 2029. These are NASA requirements, not universal rules for every operator. NASA treats mitigation policy separately from collision-assessment rules, which it addresses in NPR 8079.1. NASA directives and standards.

Operators can passivate a spacecraft—reducing stored energy that could contribute to a later breakup—and dispose of it by allowing orbital decay, arranging a controlled reentry, or moving it to a disposal orbit where appropriate. The right option depends on the mission and orbit; not all spacecraft can use the same method. Disposal reduces future hazards but does not remove debris already accumulated. ESA’s 2026 Space Environment Report says more than three intact satellites or rocket bodies reenter the atmosphere per day on average, based on data through the end of 2025, while warning that too few satellites leave congested orbits at end of life. It identifies active debris removal, including the ClearSpace-1 mission, as part of addressing the existing population. ESA Space Environment Report 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could debris make an orbit unusable?
Collisions can create fragments that raise the chance of further collisions, a cascading growth scenario often called Kessler syndrome. That describes a risk, not a claim that every orbit is already unusable. Debris prevention, end-of-life disposal, collision assessment, and active removal address different parts of the problem: preventing new fragments, limiting lingering objects, avoiding predicted encounters, and reducing accumulated debris.
