To transform an image in GIMP, open Tools → Transform Tools and choose the operation you need—such as Crop, Rotate, Scale, Perspective, or Flip. For several adjustments in one go, use Unified Transform. Before you start, check the tool’s target setting: it determines whether GIMP changes a layer, a selection, a path, or every layer.
Choose the right transform tool
GIMP provides dedicated tools for individual operations and a combined tool for several geometric adjustments. Use a dedicated tool when you know the one change you want; choose Unified Transform when you want to rotate, scale, shear, or adjust perspective in one canvas interaction. The GIMP 3.2 Transform Tools manual documents the available tools and their options.

Other available tools include 3D Transform, Handle Transform, Cage Transform, and Warp Transform. Their effects differ from the basic geometric operations, so select them when their specialized controls match the change you need.
Set what GIMP should transform
Before dragging a handle or applying an operation, inspect the transform target in Tool Options. GIMP retains the target mode when you switch transform tools, so a setting left over from an earlier operation can affect the next one.

- Layer: transforms the active layer. If that layer has a selection, the operation is limited to the selection; without one, it affects the whole layer.
- Selection: transforms the selection, or the whole layer if no selection exists.
- Path: transforms the active path.
- Image: applies the transformation to all layers.
If the result seems to affect too much, too little, or the wrong object, check this target setting first.
Rotate, resize, or change perspective
Rotate an image or layer
- Choose Tools → Transform Tools → Rotate (or press Shift+R if your key bindings match the GIMP 3.0 reference).
- Confirm the transform target in Tool Options.
- Click the target in the image and adjust the rotation using the on-canvas control or the tool’s options. Use the angle constraint for 15-degree increments when that suits the task.
- Preview the result and apply it when the orientation is right.
Resize with Scale
- Choose Tools → Transform Tools → Scale (the GIMP 3.0 key reference lists Shift+S).
- Check the target and click the layer or selection to open the scale controls.
- Set the desired dimensions. Keep the aspect ratio constrained if the image should not be stretched or squashed.
- Review the preview, including the interpolation setting, then apply the scale.
Correct perspective
- Choose Tools → Transform Tools → Perspective (the GIMP 3.0 key reference lists Shift+P).
- Set the intended target, then click the image to display its perspective handles.
- Move the handles to align the transformed edges with the desired perspective, using constraints if you need to limit the adjustment.
- Inspect the preview before applying the transformation.
Combine adjustments with Unified Transform
Unified Transform brings rotation, scaling, shearing, and perspective into one canvas operation. In the GIMP 3.2 manual, its shortcut is Shift+T. After selecting the tool, click the image to reveal its controls; use the square handles for scaling, diamond handles for shearing, and perspective handles for perspective changes. You can move the pivot when you need rotation or other adjustments to act around a different point.

- Select Tools → Transform Tools → Unified Transform, or press Shift+T.
- Check the target in Tool Options, then click the image.
- Drag the handle that matches the change. Use constraints when precision matters, such as preserving proportions while scaling or limiting a perspective or shear adjustment.
- Review the combined preview and commit it when it looks right.
For one clear operation, a dedicated tool makes the intended change easier to control. Unified Transform is useful when you need to combine several changes without switching tools.
Choose an interpolation setting when resizing
Interpolation determines how GIMP calculates pixels during a transformation. It affects processing speed and the appearance of the result, so there is no single best setting for every image and operation. The Transform Tools manual notes that None (nearest-neighbor) can produce a stair-step appearance, while Linear averages nearby pixels. Compare the preview and choose according to the image and the result you want.

Check shortcuts against your GIMP version
The GIMP 3.0 key reference lists these transform shortcuts:

Shortcuts may vary by GIMP version or because of user customization. If a listed key does not activate the tool, use the Tools menu or consult the key reference for your installed version. The menu labels and controls can also differ between versions.
