To help keep a wooden pool cue straight, clean it using care approved for its brand and shaft, store it indoors in steady conditions, and protect it in a suitable cue case. Avoid propping it against a wall or leaving it in a car, where temperature and humidity can fluctuate. The right cleaning method depends on the cue’s materials and the part you are cleaning.
Clean the cue according to its materials
Start by checking the care instructions for the cue’s brand and model. A shaft, wrap, and finished butt may need different treatment, and a product recommended by one maker is not automatically suitable for another cue.
Clean the shaft
Use only a cleaner or process approved for your cue. McDermott advises against products containing waxes or oils and names McDermott Renew and Ultraglide, along with its McMagic abrasive films, as care options: McDermott’s cue-maintenance guidance. Becue distinguishes between its Cleaner for quick shaft cleaning and its Degreaser for deeper cleaning: Becue’s care and maintenance instructions. These are maker-specific recommendations, not interchangeable or universal directions.
Clean the wrap separately
For Predator Poison cues, Predator instructs owners to wipe the wrap with a towel slightly dampened with water, then let it air-dry completely. Follow the instructions for your own cue rather than applying this wrap-cleaning method to the shaft or other components: Predator’s Poison care and maintenance instructions.

Store the cue in stable conditions
Keep a wooden cue indoors, away from extreme or rapidly changing temperature and humidity. Cue makers give somewhat different humidity recommendations, so use the guidance for your specific brand and model rather than treating one number as a universal standard.

These figures are manufacturer recommendations, not independently established thresholds or measurements of how much a particular storage method reduces warping risk. McDermott summarizes its advice this way: “The cue should be stored in consistent temperature and humidity conditions.”

Protect the cue between sessions
- Use a cue case. It protects the cue during storage and handling; Predator also recommends protecting the cue with a case.
- Do not lean a wooden cue against a wall. Predator and Falcon warn against leaning or propping up wooden cues. Set it down in its case instead.
- Do not leave it in a car. Falcon advises against this because a vehicle can expose the cue to unsuitable conditions.
For extended storage, McDermott recommends placing the cue in its case vertically with the case open to allow air movement. Treat this as McDermott’s specific instruction, not a universal rule for every cue or storage environment: McDermott’s cue-maintenance guidance. Follow your own maker’s instructions if they differ.
A simple storage routine
- After playing: Clean the shaft and any wrap or other component only as its manufacturer directs, and allow damp parts to dry fully where instructed.
- Before putting the cue away: Place it in a suitable cue case rather than leaning it against a wall or leaving it exposed.
- Choose the storage spot: Keep the cased cue indoors in a place with stable temperature and humidity, not in a vehicle or near conditions that change sharply.
- For long-term storage: Check the maker’s instructions for the case position and ventilation. McDermott’s advice for its cues is to store the case vertically and open for air movement.
What this advice can—and cannot—promise
Careful cleaning and stable storage address avoidable exposure to unsuitable conditions, but the available manufacturer guidance does not quantify how much any practice reduces warping or establish a universal humidity target for every cue. If your cue’s material or model has its own instructions, use those rather than assuming wooden-cue guidance applies to every shaft material.
