A phone that cannot run iOS 18 does not meet that listed requirement. And even on a compatible phone, some Halide features depend on the device’s camera hardware or software.
What iOS does Halide require?
Apple’s current U.S. App Store listing for Halide states that it requires iOS 18.0 or later on iPhone. Check your iOS version in Settings > General > About, then check Settings > General > Software Update to see whether an update is available. The App Store listing is the clearest current eligibility check, but it does not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility table. Lux’s reviewed developer pages do not supply one either, so there is no verified oldest supported iPhone model to name.
If your phone cannot update to iOS 18, it does not meet the listed software requirement. If you are unsure whether a specific model can update or install the app, check its available update and the current App Store listing for that device.
Does app compatibility mean every feature works?
No. Halide’s general software requirement and the requirements for an individual camera feature are separate. Features can depend on the phone’s sensors, lenses, or iOS capabilities; an integration that uses a particular control is not necessarily a requirement for ordinary camera use.

What are the trade-offs of Process Zero?
Process Zero is an optional capture mode, not a condition for Halide compatibility. Lux describes it as a minimally processed capture from raw sensor data. Its 2024 introduction described a single 12-megapixel shot; that figure describes the mode as presented at launch, not a general resolution limit for Halide or every capture format.
Because Process Zero does not combine multiple exposures the way the standard iPhone processing does, it can have less dynamic range in difficult lighting and show more grain in low light. In return, it offers a more minimally processed look. If you want Night or Portrait mode, or need the resolutions and lens options the mode lacks, use another available capture mode.

Why does Lux’s older iOS 17 statement differ?
In its August 14, 2024 launch article, Lux co-founder Ben Sandofsky wrote that Process Zero was available on every iPhone that ran Halide and iOS 17. That described availability at the time. The current U.S. App Store listing now requires iOS 18 or later, so the 2024 statement should not be used as today’s installation guidance.

How can you check your iPhone?
- Open Settings > General > About and note the iOS version.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update to check whether the phone can install iOS 18 or later.
- Review the current U.S. App Store listing for Halide on the device. If the listing does not offer installation, do not assume compatibility from another model’s experience.
- For a feature you specifically want, consult Lux’s relevant documentation: the Process Zero introduction, Process Zero manual, Halide 3.2 article, Halide changelog, and Halide Mark III overview. The overview documents features such as Looks, lens and crop views, framing guides, RAW capture options, and Photo Lab, but it does not give a complete model-by-model support matrix.
