Not necessarily. AI upscaling adds processing work, but it can also let a game render fewer pixels before reconstructing a higher-resolution image. If that saves more GPU work than the upscaler costs, total power use and heat may fall. If the extra processing outweighs those savings—or the game spends the saved capacity on more frames or effects—the result may be little change or more heat and battery drain.

Does AI upscaling drain battery?

There is no universal battery-life penalty or benefit. The net result depends on the entire rendering workload: the resolution the game renders internally, the cost of reconstruction, the frame-rate target, and what the game does with any GPU capacity it saves.

A conventional renderer shades pixels at the output resolution. An upscaler instead reconstructs a larger image from a lower-resolution input. Fewer rendered pixels can reduce shading, rasterization work, and memory-bandwidth demand, but reconstruction itself also takes compute. Qualcomm describes both sides of that trade-off for its Adreno Neural Fusion (ANF) technology: the system can reconstruct full resolution from a half-resolution input, while its reconstruction runs as a GPU compute task. Qualcomm’s explanation describes intended architectural benefits, not a guarantee of lower energy use on every phone or in every game. Qualcomm’s ANF overview.

The answer can also change if the game uses the saved headroom to raise its frame rate or graphics quality. A sharper image or smoother animation does not, by itself, show that the phone is using less power.

  • Large Cooling Area & Plug and Play: About 4.65 sq. Inches extreme thermal conductive cooling area to cover the CPU and battery module, protecting your phone from blackening or sudden shut-off. Use the C-type cable(included), plug and play.

Will AI upscaling make my phone heat up while gaming?

It can, but upscaling alone does not determine phone temperature. Android says high CPU and GPU utilization generates heat. When a device gets too hot, it can lower CPU and GPU clocks to cool down; that thermal throttling can affect both game performance and battery drain. The phone model, cooling design, game scene, settings, ambient conditions, and session length all influence sustained behavior. Android’s game power-efficiency guidance.

A short run may not reveal what happens after the device warms up. Compare sustained sessions and note frame pacing as well as temperature: performance that starts smoothly may change once the phone throttles.

Not all mobile upscaling works the same way

“AI upscaling” is not one uniform feature. Vendor descriptions illustrate different approaches, and they should not be read as controlled, head-to-head tests of battery life or temperature.

Technology Vendor-described approach What that means for power claims
Adreno Neural Fusion (ANF) Qualcomm describes a temporal super-resolution path that uses color, depth, motion vectors, and jitter information to reconstruct full resolution from a half-resolution input. The reconstruction runs as a GPU compute task. Lower internal resolution may reduce rendering work, but the reconstruction also costs compute. Qualcomm’s description is not a universal battery or temperature result.
Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) Qualcomm describes the original GSR as a single-pass spatial upscaler that combines upscaling with sharpening. A spatial approach differs from temporal reconstruction; results depend on its implementation and the game’s workload.
Snapdragon Game Super Resolution 2 (GSR2) Qualcomm describes GSR2 as a temporal approach using color, depth, and motion-vector inputs. Qualcomm’s published processing timings are implementation-specific, not measurements of phone battery life or temperature.
Exynos Neural Super Sampling (ENSS) Samsung describes ENSS as combining Neural Super Sampling (NSS) with Neural Frame Generation (NFG). NSS reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. Samsung says NSS is designed to reduce GPU rendering workload while maintaining image quality; this is a vendor description, not an independent energy comparison.

Qualcomm’s ANF frame generation is related to, but distinct from, resolution upscaling: it inserts a generated frame between two rendered frames to increase apparent smoothness without rendering another full scene for each inserted frame. It still uses compute resources, so it should not be treated as interchangeable with upscaling or as automatically power-saving. Qualcomm’s ANF overview. Samsung also describes NFG as part of ENSS. What the published performance numbers tell you—and what they do not

Qualcomm reported the following processing times for its two-pass GSR2 fragment-shader variant on the described Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 implementation. These figures describe that implementation’s processing time at each scaling factor; they are not battery-life, temperature, or whole-game power measurements. Qualcomm’s GSR2 article.

Scaling factor Reported processing time Source and qualification
2.0× (630×1400 to 1260×2800) 0.905 ms Qualcomm, 2024; its two-pass fragment-shader variant on the described Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 implementation.
1.7× 1.024 ms Qualcomm, 2024; same described variant and implementation.
1.5× 1.107 ms Qualcomm, 2024; same described variant and implementation.

Those timings cannot be converted into a typical battery percentage, extra minutes of play, or temperature change. The available vendor descriptions and Android guidance do not establish a controlled, independent, multi-device comparison of mobile-game AI upscaling switched on versus off.

How to compare upscaling on and off

To get a useful comparison on your own phone, change only the upscaling setting. Qualcomm notes that thermal thresholds and device behavior vary by manufacturer, and recommends testing on physical devices; Android also warns that display refresh rates above a game’s target can consume extra power without improving gameplay. Qualcomm’s Adreno low-power gaming guidance and Android’s power-efficiency guidance.

  1. Use the same conditions: keep the phone, game scene, brightness, network mode, refresh rate, frame-rate cap, and graphics settings fixed.
  2. Change one feature: compare upscaling on and off. If the game offers frame generation separately, test it separately rather than combining the two changes.
  3. Run a sustained session: use the same duration for each setting so the phone has time to warm up and any throttling can appear.
  4. Record more than image sharpness: note battery use and temperature along with frame pacing and visual quality.
  5. Interpret the result in context: if one mode targets a higher frame rate or uses different graphics settings, the comparison cannot isolate the effect of upscaling.

This is a practical comparison method, not a published test result. Qualcomm also identifies overdraw and shader complexity as common sources of excessive GPU load and thermal strain, so other parts of a game’s workload may dominate the outcome.

How to decide whether to leave it on

  • Keep it on if the image looks better to you and the phone maintains acceptable frame pacing and battery use during a sustained session.
  • Turn it off or lower the target if the game becomes less stable, the phone gets uncomfortably warm, or battery use rises under otherwise comparable conditions.
  • Check the specific game and device for support and available controls; a chipset feature’s existence does not mean every game or phone exposes the same options.
