For most livestream chat systems, the best starting point is to scale WebSocket connections separately from message routing and fanout. Put a horizontally scalable gateway fleet at the edge, validate and moderate messages before distribution, route accepted messages by channel, and fan them out through workers that can be scaled independently. Plan a separate path for durable storage if you need replay, audit, search, or video synchronization. A very popular channel may need hierarchical fanout or dedicated capacity; channel-based partitioning alone does not remove a hot-channel bottleneck.

Why livestream chat needs more than a WebSocket server

Chat has two distinct scaling problems: keeping many client connections open, and distributing messages to the right connected viewers quickly. A gateway fleet can handle the first while a routing and fanout layer handles the second. Treating these as one job makes it harder to add capacity where it is needed and increases the impact of a bottleneck or failure.

A useful public example is Twitch Engineering’s 2015 description of its chat system. It described Edge nodes receiving and distributing messages between clients and backend services, with Pubsub distributing messages internally across Edge nodes. That is a hierarchical fanout design: the system does not rely on one machine to write every message directly to every recipient. Twitch said at the time that its system handled hundreds of billions of chat messages per day; that is a dated claim about Twitch, not a current benchmark or a sizing target for another service.

A practical reference architecture

Keep the responsibilities separate enough that connection handling, policy checks, routing, fanout, and persistence can be scaled or fail independently. A message should not reach viewers until it has passed the checks your product requires.

  1. Client edge: terminate WebSocket connections at a horizontally scalable gateway fleet. Authenticate sessions, enforce connection and message-size controls, and forward accepted commands. Keep connection state local where practical instead of requiring every gateway to own global room state.
  2. Ingress and policy: validate identity and room permissions; apply rate limits, slow mode, spam detection, and moderation. Separate message acceptance from downstream display so overload in fanout does not silently bypass abuse controls.
  3. Channel routing: map each room to a stable partition or owner so messages for that room reach the right workers. This improves locality and gives you a way to add partitions, but monitor uneven traffic: one exceptionally busy room can overload its assigned partition.
  4. Fanout: publish each accepted message to the room’s subscribed connections. Use staged or hierarchical fanout when one publisher would otherwise write to a very large number of sockets. For unusually active rooms, consider splitting fanout across a tree or assigning dedicated resources.
  5. Persistence, if needed: write to durable storage when the product needs replay, moderation audit, search, or VOD synchronization. You can put persistence on an asynchronous path if the live experience prioritizes latency, but define what can be lost and how clients recover.

Choose routing and fanout for the hottest channel, not just average traffic

Partitioning by channel is a practical way to keep a conversation’s work together and distribute many rooms across workers. It does not mean every partition receives equal load. A single channel with a huge audience can dominate a partition, and routing every message to one owner can simply move the bottleneck from the gateway to that owner.

Measure per-channel ingress and recipient counts, then decide whether a hot room needs more fanout stages, dedicated capacity, or product controls such as slow mode or controlled sampling. Those controls change what viewers experience, so treat them as product decisions rather than invisible infrastructure fixes. Twitch’s published architecture illustrates hierarchical distribution, but its 2015 post does not disclose current implementation details or prescribe a universal design.

Choose Redis, Kafka, managed messaging, or a custom stack by workload

There is no universally best broker established by the available platform examples. Redis Pub/Sub, Kafka, managed real-time services, and a self-operated gateway-and-broker stack are candidates to test, not default answers. A managed service may reduce operational work; self-operation may provide more control but adds staffing and reliability responsibilities.

  • Peak concurrent connections and incoming messages per second.
  • Recipients per message and the skew between ordinary and hottest channels.
  • Target end-to-end latency, ordering requirements, and acceptable delivery guarantees.
  • Whether messages need retention, replay, or cross-region distribution.
  • Moderation and abuse-control requirements, recovery objectives, staffing capacity, and total cost at expected traffic.

Load-test with realistic channel skew, reconnect storms, message sizes, moderation work, and recipient counts before committing. The cited platform material does not establish comparative broker benchmarks, provider pricing, or universal latency, throughput, or server-count targets.

Make delivery guarantees and reconnect recovery explicit

Decide whether a message can be lost, duplicated, delayed, or reordered, and make the client and consumer behavior match that decision. “Delivered” can mean accepted by the service, queued, or received by a viewer; define which event your product promises.

Twitch’s EventSub documentation says notifications are delivered at least once and may be resent with the same message ID. Consumers of that interface therefore need to deduplicate. That guarantee is specific to EventSub and should not be assumed for another broker or for ordinary WebSocket delivery.

Reconnection is a separate failure case from duplicate delivery. Twitch’s EventSub WebSocket documentation says a dropped session requires recreating subscriptions, and events lost between disconnect and resubscription are not replayed. If your own chat promises continuity, design an explicit recovery mechanism—such as a recent-message fetch or a durable cursor—rather than assuming a reconnected socket fills gaps automatically.

Use Twitch’s current interfaces carefully when integrating with Twitch

Twitch’s developer documentation lists EventSub transports as Webhooks, WebSockets, and Conduits; EventSub subscriptions are generally transport-agnostic, subject to per-event limitations. For Twitch integrations, the documented platform limits below are scoped product rules, not recommended capacities for a chat system you operate yourself.

  • EventSub WebSockets: the documentation accessed October 4, 2026 lists three enabled connections, up to 300 enabled subscriptions per connection, and a total max_total_cost of 10 for the applicable client ID and user ID token tuple. These values are Twitch limits and may change.
  • EventSub Conduits: Twitch says notifications are routed using a hashing mechanism based on channel ID, and shard count can be scaled up or down. The documentation lists up to five enabled conduits and up to 20,000 shards per conduit, explicitly subject to change. If a notification reaches a disabled shard, Twitch attempts another shard; if that shard is also disabled, the notification is dropped.
  • Legacy interfaces and transport security: Twitch’s lifecycle documentation lists EventSub, EventSub WebSockets, and EventSub Conduits as active, and PubSub as deprecated, with permanent shutdown dated April 14, 2025. It also records decommissioning non-secure WebSocket connections to Twitch IRC servers on August 15, 2025. Check current policy and use secure transport.
  • Chat joins and sends: Twitch chat documentation noted a global concurrent-join limit of 100 room joins per user account as of May 15, 2024, with exceptions for broadcaster, moderator, and authorized bot contexts. The limits are platform-specific; scaling your own infrastructure does not grant permission to bypass them.

Monitor overload and failure before users report missing chat

Instrument the whole path from accepted message to client delivery. Useful signals include active connections, ingress rate, fanout ratio, per-channel skew, queue age, dropped and duplicate events, reconnect rate, moderation latency, and end-to-end delivery latency. These are operational recommendations, not universal threshold values.

Apply backpressure and define overload behavior so queues do not grow without bound. Depending on product requirements, that behavior might reject or defer new messages, apply slow mode, reduce optional work, or shed traffic in a controlled way. Make the behavior visible to clients where appropriate, and alert on queue growth, delivery lag, or rising reconnects before those conditions turn into a prolonged outage.
