The game must implement an upscaler, and the handset’s graphics platform must support the game’s chosen rendering path. An NPU is not always required: some upscalers use the GPU, while Unreal Engine documents a mobile-optimized FSR 1.0 path that does not depend on neural hardware.
What determines whether a phone can use an upscaler?
Two things have to line up: the game needs to include and enable a particular upscaling technology, and the phone needs compatible graphics hardware and software for that implementation. A chipset feature list alone does not prove that a specific game supports the feature on a particular handset.
- Game implementation: Check whether the exact mobile game supports the named upscaler and enables it for your phone model or graphics API.
- Graphics platform: Check the phone’s exact chipset and GPU against the requirements for that implementation. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR), for example, is optimized for Adreno GPUs.
- Rendering path: Some paths use GPU resources; others may use dedicated AI hardware or involve both GPU and NPU. The game developer must integrate the required pipeline.
The available official sources do not establish a universal minimum for RAM, storage, phone price, or chipset tier. They also do not provide an exhaustive current list of compatible phone models and games.
How mobile upscaling technologies differ
Snapdragon Game Super Resolution
Qualcomm describes its original GSR as a single-pass spatial upscaler optimized for Snapdragon Adreno GPUs. It uses information from the current frame rather than relying on earlier frames. Qualcomm has described game implementations and image-quality or performance benefits, but those are vendor claims, not independent comparisons of retail phones. Qualcomm’s GSR overview includes examples of mobile game use.

Snapdragon Game Super Resolution 2
GSR 2 adds temporal information from previously rendered frames. In an October 2024 article, Qualcomm described a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 implementation targeting 1260×2800 output. Qualcomm reported a developer feedback target of under 2 milliseconds at maximum GPU frequency in that context and a 1 ms cost for one optimized fragment-shader variant. Those are vendor-reported implementation figures, not expected timings for every handset or game. Developers can choose among variants, and the result depends on the particular implementation. Qualcomm’s GSR 2 article explains its approach.
Adreno Neural Fusion
Qualcomm introduced Adreno Neural Fusion (ANF) in September 2026 as a rendering technology that combines neural super resolution and frame generation. Its SDK describes reconstructing full-resolution output from half-resolution jittered input and synthesizing an intermediate frame. The pipeline uses color, depth, and motion-vector buffers.

According to Qualcomm’s ANF SDK information, inference runs on Adreno matrix cores on devices that have them. On devices without those cores, the SDK may route techniques through the NPU using GPU–NPU interoperation. Either way, ANF is not a switch a phone owner can turn on independently: the game developer must integrate the rendering pipeline and provide the required buffers. Qualcomm’s ANF overview also discusses the intended thermal benefits of its approach, but does not provide independent comparisons among handsets.
Unreal Engine Mobile FSR
AI is not a requirement for all mobile upscaling. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 Mobile FSR documentation describes rendering at lower resolution and upscaling to the display’s native output using a mobile-optimized FSR 1.0 option. Whether a player can use it depends on the game’s engine integration and supported devices.

What to check before buying a gaming phone
- Confirm support in the exact game. Look for the named upscaler in the game’s mobile feature information or ask the publisher whether it works on the exact handset model. Generic claims such as “AI gaming” or “has an NPU” are not proof of game support.
- Verify the chipset and GPU. For Qualcomm GSR features, check the exact Snapdragon platform and Adreno GPU. Qualcomm product briefs list GSR on Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and GSR 2.0 on Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. These are platform-level feature statements, not confirmation that every phone using those platforms—or every game—exposes the feature. - Ask which hardware the implementation uses. ANF may use Adreno matrix cores or, on some devices, route work through an NPU. An NPU on its own does not guarantee ANF or any other game upscaler will run.
- Consider sustained performance and heat. Rendering fewer pixels can reduce GPU work and memory bandwidth, but a stable frame rate over time also depends on the phone’s cooling, power limits, software, and the game’s workload. An upscaler does not guarantee a fixed frame rate or better-looking results in every scene.
- Match the display to your use. Consider the phone’s output resolution and refresh rate alongside the game’s settings. The sources do not establish a universal screen specification or minimum RAM, storage, or price for upscaled mobile gaming.
When comparing phones, prioritize verified support for your game, then sustained graphics performance and heat behavior. After that, weigh display characteristics, battery behavior, and price against your own needs.
