What Halide’s manual controls do
Halide describes an experience that ranges from automatic decisions to what it calls “total control over shutter speed, ISO and white balance.” That is Halide/Lux Optics’ description of the app, not an independent assessment. See Halide’s product page.
- Focus determines which distance appears sharp. Manual focus lets you choose that distance instead of relying entirely on automatic focus.
- ISO is an exposure control available in Halide’s manual mode. The cited product information does not establish a Halide-specific ISO range.
- Shutter speed is another exposure control. It affects exposure and how motion is rendered; a slower shutter can make camera movement more visible.
Focus is distinct from exposure: changing ISO or shutter speed does not itself select the subject’s focus distance. The result also remains subject to the capabilities of the particular iPhone camera module.
How to adjust focus and exposure
Halide documents the gesture directions as vertical swipes for exposure and horizontal swipes for focus. The public product page does not give the full sequence for entering manual mode, choosing an individual exposure parameter, or locking a value. Avoid assuming that a particular control is in a particular place: interface details can change.

- Adjust focus with a horizontal swipe. Halide describes swiping left or right for focus. Use the live view and available focus aids to assess the subject.
- Review the image before taking it. Check that the intended distance appears sharp and that the exposure suits the scene. If the live view or controls behave differently from the instructions you have, consult the current manual rather than relying on outdated button names.
Use focus peaking and the focus loupe to judge sharpness
Halide identifies focus peaking and a focus loupe as aids for manual focusing. Use them to help assess whether the important part of the scene is in focus while adjusting. The product page names these aids but does not specify their exact on-screen behavior, so follow the current in-app guidance for what their displays mean.
For a sharp photo, identify the distance that matters first—such as a nearby subject or a more distant scene—then adjust focus and inspect the result with the available aids. A focus aid helps you judge focus; it cannot remove the physical limits of the iPhone camera being used.

Choose ISO and shutter speed for the scene
Both controls affect exposure, but they are not interchangeable in their effect on the photograph. Use Halide’s current controls and live view to assess the result rather than assuming a numeric range or a particular setting will be available on every iPhone.
ISO
Change ISO when adjusting exposure through that control is appropriate for the scene. No numeric ISO range is established by Halide’s cited product information, so consult the app for the values available on your device.

Shutter speed
Shutter speed changes exposure and the way motion is captured. If you select a slower shutter, steadier support can help keep framing stable; a phone tripod is an optional aid, not a Halide requirement. No particular tripod model or compatibility has been verified here.
