If the response has an ETag, send it with a conditional request: YouTube returns updated data if the resource changed, or HTTP 304 Not Modified if it did not. Keep the cached body on a 304; replace it and save the new ETag when YouTube returns a changed representation. YouTube does not set one universal cache TTL, so choose a revalidation interval for your application while following the API’s data-storage rules.
How to refresh an expired YouTube API cache
Store each response with its ETag, the time it was fetched, and the identity of the resource or query. That lets your application know what to revalidate and when. Google’s YouTube Data API Overview describes caching resources together with their ETags.
- Identify the resource. When refreshing a known video, use
videos.listwith its ID rather than repeating a broad search. Request only the parts and fields the application needs. - Send a conditional request if your client supports it. Include the stored ETag in the conditional request for that same resource. ETag support varies among client libraries, so confirm how your library and HTTP transport handle conditional requests.
- Handle the response. If YouTube returns a changed representation, replace the cached body and store its new ETag and fetch time. If it returns HTTP 304 Not Modified, keep the cached body and mark it as revalidated.
- Present the data with its real freshness. YouTube’s Developer Policies require user-facing displays to use the most updated API data available. If a refresh fails, showing the prior value with its age or historical context is safer than presenting it as current.
A 304 response means the cached representation remains valid for that conditional request; it does not mean the application can stop tracking when it should check again.
Choose a refresh pattern for your application
YouTube does not prescribe a universal TTL or refresh schedule. Set the application’s revalidation interval according to how fresh the user experience must be, expected request volume, whether conditional requests work in your client, and the applicable retention deadline.

Neither pattern changes YouTube’s requirement to make reasonable efforts to keep stored API data consistent with current data. The policies specifically call out reflecting metadata changes and view-count updates as quickly as possible.
Apply the right storage deadline to each data category
The 30-calendar-day rules in YouTube’s Developer Policies are retention ceilings for specified categories, not a general freshness target or permission to serve stale responses for 30 days. The rules differ by data type:

- Analytics, Reporting API data, and certain statistics retrieved as authorized data: These may be stored as long as necessary for the consented purpose, but the client must verify every 30 days that authorization remains valid. For the policy’s video-views example, it must also check that the video has not been deleted.
- Statistics retrieved as non-authorized data: These may not be stored for more than 30 days.
- Other authorized data: Store it only as long as needed for the consented purpose and no longer than 30 calendar days; after that, delete or refresh it.
- Limited amounts of non-authorized data: These may be stored temporarily for no longer than 30 calendar days, then deleted or refreshed.
Across these categories, YouTube says API clients must use reasonable efforts to keep stored data consistent with what is currently available through YouTube API Services. It also permits historical API data when it is accurately presented in its time context.
Refresh known resources without wasting quota
For a known video ID, videos.list is a targeted way to fetch the resource. The Videos: list reference lists a cost of one quota unit per call; confirm current method costs before relying on them.

- Use the appropriate list method for the resource you already know instead of repeating a broad search.
- Specify only necessary
partproperties and usefieldsto trim nested properties. The API overview says these parameters reduce unnecessary retrieval and transfer. - Plan search refreshes separately:
search.listuses its own quota bucket, and pagination requires additional requests. - Monitor the quota actually assigned to your project. The API overview documents default daily allocations of 100
search.listcalls, 100videos.insertcalls, and 10,000 units for other endpoints; Google warns these defaults may change.
The Quota and Compliance Audits page repeats the default limits and says a quota audit must be completed before requesting additional quota. Check your project’s API Console for its current allocation.

A cache TTL is an application choice: it determines when to check the API again for freshness or performance reasons. A conditional request helps avoid downloading an unchanged representation, but does not set that TTL. A policy deadline determines how long a particular category of data may be retained. Track these separately so an entry is revalidated when needed and deleted or refreshed before its applicable retention limit.
