Check your exact phone model against the official compatibility information for the carrier and country where you plan to use satellite service. Then confirm software, plan, and local coverage requirements. A phone’s built-in emergency satellite feature is not proof that it supports a carrier’s satellite-enhanced mobile service.
1. Find your phone’s exact model
Compatibility can depend on the specific model or regional variant, not just the brand or product family. Find the model name and number in your phone’s settings, on its original packaging, or in the carrier’s device details. If the carrier offers an IMEI checker, retrieve the IMEI from the phone’s settings or dialer as directed by that carrier.
For example, Rogers provides a model or IMEI lookup. O2 publishes a supported-device list. Use the page for the carrier you actually intend to use: a phone appearing on one provider’s list does not establish eligibility with another.
2. Check the intended carrier and country
Open the carrier’s official satellite service page and check the exact model or IMEI. Confirm that the service is offered where you will use it, and check the carrier’s current coverage information. Availability and supported functions vary by service and region; for example, Rogers describes its satellite service as available in specified areas of Canada, while O2 maintains its own market-specific device and service guidance (Rogers Satellite FAQs; O2 compatible devices).

Do not rely on a generic “satellite-ready” claim without checking what it means for the carrier service you want. When comparing services, verify the eligible handset and variant, country and coverage footprint, plan, software requirements, and supported tasks—such as emergency communication, messaging, or selected apps or data—on each provider’s own pages.
3. Confirm software, plan, and service requirements
- Software: Install the current software version required by the carrier. Apple requires the latest iOS for carrier-provided satellite features on iPhone, and Rogers and O2 also direct users to update device software (Apple’s carrier satellite feature guidance; Rogers Satellite FAQs; O2 Satellite help).
- Plan: Check whether your carrier requires a particular eligible plan. A compatible model alone may not be enough; Apple notes that some carrier-provided features require a supported plan (Apple Support).
- Service details: Read which functions are included and where they work. Satellite support does not necessarily mean ordinary voice, text, and data service everywhere a terrestrial signal is unavailable.
4. Use the iPhone indicators carefully
For carrier-provided satellite features, Apple says eligibility requires iPhone 13 or later, the latest iOS, a supported carrier, and, in some cases, a supported plan. When the carrier feature is active, the status bar displays “SAT.” You can also check Settings for a Satellite option, which can be turned off. If that option is absent, Apple says the carrier might not offer or support carrier-provided satellite features on the device (About carrier-provided satellite features on iPhone).

Treat these as iPhone-specific clues, not as a universal compatibility test. The carrier’s checker remains the more direct way to verify a particular model, plan, and market.
5. Don’t confuse phone-maker satellite features with carrier service
Phones can support satellite functions supplied by the manufacturer separately from a carrier’s satellite-enhanced mobile network. Apple’s own satellite features include emergency services, roadside assistance, messaging, and location sharing on iPhone 14 or later in select regions; their eligibility rules are different from those for carrier-provided features (Connect to a satellite with your iPhone; About carrier-provided satellite features on iPhone).

So, being able to use Emergency SOS via satellite does not by itself show that your phone and plan qualify for a carrier’s satellite service. Check the relevant service’s requirements independently.

Passing a compatibility check does not guarantee a usable connection at every location. Satellite access depends on conditions at the time and place you try to connect. Apple says a clear view of the sky and horizon helps; trees, terrain, or buildings can slow or block a connection. Rogers also lists location, terrain, weather, line of sight, software, battery, and network conditions as factors that can affect service (Apple Support; Rogers Satellite FAQs).

If the checker says your phone is unsupported
- Recheck the exact model or IMEI, especially if your phone is an imported or regional variant.
- Install the carrier-required software update and check the carrier’s current list again.
- Confirm that the service is offered in your country and that your plan is eligible.
- If the carrier still marks the device unsupported, do not assume another carrier’s satellite service will accept it; check that provider’s own compatibility information.
