A Windows 11 blue screen does not automatically mean your personal files are gone. First check for existing backups and avoid changes that could overwrite data. If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) for targeted repair; before choosing Reset or reinstall, read what that option will keep or remove. If files were deleted, Windows File Recovery may help, but it is not a fix for every startup failure or damaged drive.

What to do first to protect your files

  1. Stop risky changes. Do not reset, reinstall, format, or create partitions on the affected drive before checking for copies. If Windows still starts, copy your most important files to a separate drive before troubleshooting further.
  2. Check backups from another device. Sign in to OneDrive or your other cloud account on a working device. Also check whether File History or another backup was configured. File History keeps versions only when it was set up to save copies to an external drive or network location. See Microsoft’s File History instructions and Windows Backup information. Windows Backup restores apps and settings through its account-based flow; personal data backups are handled separately.
  3. Pay attention to drive symptoms. If the drive repeatedly clicks, becomes unreadable, or appears physically damaged, stop trying software recovery. Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not establish a consumer method to diagnose or repair physical drive failure. If the files are important, consider qualified data-recovery assistance.

Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance warns that using the computer can overwrite deleted data: “If you want to increase your chances of recovering a file, minimize or avoid using your computer.”

Choose the next step based on your situation

Situation What to try Personal-file impact
Windows starts, and files are present Copy important files to a separate drive; then troubleshoot. Copying does not remove the originals.
Windows will not start Enter WinRE and try a targeted option such as Startup Repair, System Restore, or uninstalling a recent update. Startup Repair targets startup problems. System Restore keeps personal files, though it can undo recent apps, drivers, updates, or settings.
Files were deleted and Windows is usable Check backups first; then consider Windows File Recovery with a separate destination drive. Recovery is not guaranteed; new writes may overwrite recoverable data.
You are considering a reset or reinstall Read the on-screen keep/remove choice before continuing. Impact varies: Reset can keep personal files if you choose that option; recovery-drive reinstall removes personal files, apps, and settings.

These paths solve different problems: repairing startup, restoring a saved copy, and attempting to recover deleted files are not interchangeable.

How to enter Windows Recovery Environment when Windows will not start

WinRE includes tools such as Startup Repair, System Restore, Command Prompt, update removal, and system image recovery. Windows may enter it automatically after repeated failed starts. Microsoft describes interrupting startup twice and expecting Automatic Repair on the third start, but forcibly powering off is disruptive; use that route only if normal sign-in and supported restart routes are unavailable. A prepared recovery USB can boot into WinRE. You can also create Windows installation media on another working PC, boot the affected PC from it, and choose Repair my PC. The boot-menu key and steps depend on the device manufacturer.

  4. If the blue screen began after a Windows update, consider the update-removal option in Advanced options.

Menu names and available options can vary by Windows version, device configuration, and organization policy. Microsoft explains the available routes in its Windows Recovery Environment guide.

Will Startup Repair, System Restore, Reset, or reinstall delete my files?

They have different effects. Read the choice shown on your screen rather than assuming every recovery tool preserves data.

Option Effect on personal files Other changes to expect
Startup Repair It is a startup-repair tool, not a personal-file backup or recovery option. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not state that it deletes personal files. Attempts to fix problems preventing Windows from starting.
System Restore Keeps personal files. Can roll back system files and settings, and may undo recent applications, drivers, updates, or settings. See Microsoft’s System Restore guide.
Reset this PC — Keep my files Keeps personal files according to Microsoft’s recovery-options guidance. Removes apps and settings.
Reset this PC — Remove everything Removes personal files. Resets Windows and removes apps and settings.
Reinstall from a Recovery Drive Removes personal files. Also removes apps and settings. A Recovery Drive is not a personal-file backup.
Other reinstall paths Depends on the path and choices shown. Check the on-screen explanation before proceeding.

Microsoft outlines these distinctions in its Windows recovery options and Recovery Drive instructions. Creating a Recovery Drive erases the USB drive you use, so copy anything on that USB elsewhere first.

Can Windows File Recovery get deleted files back?

It may recover deleted files from local storage, but it is a command-line tool for deleted-file recovery—not a general remedy for a blue-screen failure, an inaccessible drive, or a physically damaged disk. Recovery is not guaranteed. If deleted files matter, avoid using the affected PC as much as possible before attempting recovery.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

What you need before running it

  • Windows File Recovery, Microsoft’s command-line app from the Microsoft Store.
  • A separate destination drive: the source and destination must be different drives. If the PC has only one drive, connect a USB or external hard drive for the recovered files.
  • Access to the source volume. If Windows or the drive cannot be accessed, this tool may not be the right path.

Microsoft states: “The source and destination drives must be different.” The tool cannot recover files from cloud storage or network shares; look for those files in the corresponding cloud account or backup instead.

Pick a recovery mode

  • Regular mode: Microsoft recommends this for recently deleted files on NTFS drives.
  • Extensive mode: Microsoft recommends this for older deletions, formatted or corrupted NTFS drives, and FAT or exFAT drives.

When the source is the operating-system drive, use filters to identify the user files or folders you want to recover. Follow the current Windows File Recovery instructions for the command syntax and filter examples. Deleted data may already have been overwritten, including on an SSD, so success cannot be promised.

Where to find your BitLocker recovery key

WinRE may ask for the BitLocker recovery key before it can access an encrypted drive. You need the legitimate key to unlock the volume; this is not a step to bypass encryption. Depending on how the PC was set up, the key may be saved to a Microsoft account, stored as a file, printed, or held by your organization’s IT administrator in Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory.

  • For a personal device, check the Microsoft account used when BitLocker was enabled and any saved or printed recovery-key records.
  • For a work- or school-managed device, contact your administrator if you cannot locate the key yourself.

See Microsoft’s instructions for finding a BitLocker recovery key. Where the key is stored depends on the account, device enrollment, and organization policy.

Which recovery path should you choose?

  • Need files that still exist? Check cloud and configured backups first. If Windows starts, copy important files to a separate drive before trying repairs.
  • Windows will not boot? Use WinRE for a targeted startup repair, restore point, or update removal before considering reset or reinstall.
  • Deleted files are missing? Check backups, then consider Windows File Recovery only if you can use a different destination drive and the source is accessible.
  • BitLocker blocks access? Locate the recovery key through the account, saved record, or administrator associated with the device.
  • The drive appears physically damaged? Stop attempts that could change it and consider qualified data recovery help if the files are valuable.

No single repair works for every blue screen. The safest next move depends on whether Windows boots, whether the files were backed up or deleted, whether BitLocker can be unlocked, and whether you have another drive for a copy or recovery destination.
