AI slop is a contested label for material made mostly or entirely with generative AI that appears to have received little human care for accuracy, usefulness, or how people are likely to interpret it. It is not a synonym for everything made with AI: AI authorship and content quality are separate questions. Low-cost production and online distribution can make high-volume material easier to circulate, but the available evidence does not show that every platform boosts it or that every example is harmful.

What does “AI slop” mean?

There is no single agreed technical definition of AI slop. In a study of educational videos, the authors proposed a care-based definition: “slop is any material, created mostly or entirely by generative AI, with little or no apparent human care toward the accuracy, fluency, or helpfulness of the material or of its most likely use or interpretation.” That is the study authors’ working definition for their context, not a universal standard.

A separate conceptual paper describes slop through a family of traits rather than a fixed checklist: superficial competence, where something looks polished but lacks substance; asymmetry of effort, where generation takes far less effort than comparable work otherwise would; and mass producibility. The paper also argues that slop can have social or aesthetic functions, so “slop” does not automatically mean that nobody finds a piece entertaining or meaningful.

Why is there so much AI-generated content online?

Generative tools lower the effort needed to produce material

Generative systems can produce text, images, audio, or video with less effort than creating each item by hand. That makes it easier for a creator to produce more material, including repetitive or minimally reviewed output. A 2026 report from Columbia University’s Institute of Global Politics links lower production barriers with expanded distribution.

Online platforms offer ways to reach an audience

Platforms let material circulate widely, and some creators shape content to capture attention, rank in search, or follow platform trends, the Columbia report says. Together, cheaper production and broad distribution can create incentives for high-volume output. This describes an incentive structure; it does not establish that a particular algorithm promotes every AI-generated post, or that every creator is trying to deceive people or make money.

What do current estimates actually measure?

Available figures are bounded studies, not a count of all AI slop online. They measure different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Study Finding What it does—and does not—show
Pew Research Center, August 20, 2026 In a random sample of 10,000 webpages collected in July 2026, 10% showed significant signs of AI authorship. The share was over one-third among pages published after ChatGPT’s public release. Pew used Open Pangram, a machine-learning detector looking for language patterns associated with AI authorship. This is a detector-based estimate, not a verified census of who wrote each page and not a measure of quality or slop.
JMIR Medical Education, 2025 Researchers screened 1,082 YouTube and TikTok videos in selected preclinical biomedical science topics, gathered in February and March 2025. They judged 57 (5.3%) to be probably AI-generated and low-quality. This is a result for those topics, platforms, and dates—not a rate for all videos or social media. The authors distinguish careless material from false claims.

The two figures answer different questions: Pew estimated signs of AI authorship across a webpage sample, while the JMIR study classified a specific group of videos as both probably AI-generated and low-quality. Neither tells us what share of the internet is slop.

How can you tell whether something is AI slop?

There is no dependable single visual or textual tell established by these sources. A strange image, generic phrasing, or an apparent error can prompt closer scrutiny, but none proves AI authorship or sloppiness on its own. Conversely, polished work can still be careless or inaccurate.

It is more useful to assess the work than to guess how it was made. Consider whether it is accurate, fluent, relevant to its context, and helpful for its likely audience. Ask what purpose it serves—such as informing, entertaining, attracting attention, or gaining search visibility—and what consequences it could have for people who rely on it. These are practical questions, not a validated scoring system.

Is AI slop the same as misinformation?

No. Low-effort or careless material may be wrong, but poor quality does not by itself make something misinformation or prove deceptive intent. The JMIR authors explicitly distinguish careless material from false claims. A Columbia University cross-sector convening treated risks to the information ecosystem as matters for continued discussion, rather than establishing that every instance has the same effect.

How to interpret the label

  • “AI-generated” describes how material may have been made; it does not establish that it is low quality.
  • “AI slop” is an evaluative, unsettled label, not a formal technical category.
  • Evidence about AI authorship, quality, prevalence, and harm answers different questions; do not treat one measure as proof of another.

For further context, see the Columbia Institute of Global Politics report on AI slop and the information ecosystem, “Why Slop Matters”, and the Columbia convening’s account of definitional uncertainty and ecosystem concerns.
