No—not as an officially documented, headset-free SteamVR setup. Sony’s PC instructions require the PS VR2 headset as well as its PC adapter, app, SteamVR, and Bluetooth-paired Sense controllers. Meta’s documentation identifies Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers as Quest-device input; the reviewed sources do not describe tracking them directly in SteamVR without a Quest headset.
Can you use PSVR 2 or Quest 3 controllers with SteamVR without their headsets?
The official documentation reviewed does not establish a supported way to use either controller set for SteamVR without its matching headset. That is different from proving that no unofficial driver, workaround, or community experiment exists. The practical distinction is that pairing a controller over Bluetooth is not, by itself, evidence that SteamVR can track it in space.
PS VR2 Sense controllers on a PC
Sony’s documented PS VR2 PC setup includes all of the following components:
- The PS VR2 headset connected to the PC through the PS VR2 PC adapter.
- The PlayStation VR2 app and SteamVR.
- PS VR2 Sense controllers paired through the PC’s Bluetooth settings.
Sony’s PC setup instructions and PC adapter manual describe this as a complete headset-and-controller configuration. Bluetooth is the documented controller pairing method within that configuration; Sony does not present it as a substitute for the headset or as proof of headset-free SteamVR tracking.

For the documented workflow, connect the PC adapter directly rather than through a USB hub or extension cable: Sony warns that those may cause the adapter to malfunction. Sony’s support page also covers controller tracking troubleshooting and using the controller’s PS button to access the SteamVR dashboard. The PlayStation VR2 support page lists PC support information, including features that are unavailable on PC, so do not assume the full PS5 feature set carries over to SteamVR.
What Sony means by “without the headset”
Sony’s FAQ asks, “Can I use the PS VR2 Sense controller without the PS VR2 headset?” Its answer is: “Yes, the PS VR2 Sense controller will work with the PS5 console without the use of a PS VR2 headset.” That answer is specifically about using the controller with a PS5 console. It does not say that Sense controllers can be tracked independently in SteamVR on a PC.

Sony announced PC access to SteamVR titles through the adapter on June 3, 2024, but that documented PC setup retains the PS VR2 headset. The announcement is not a headset-free controller mode.
Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers on a PC
Meta’s device comparison identifies Touch controllers as primary input for Quest devices and lists Quest Touch Plus controllers as supported and available separately. Meta’s controller overview says Touch Plus shipped with Quest 3 and Quest 3S.

Those pages describe the controllers in Meta’s Quest device and runtime context. The official Meta material reviewed does not document a mode for tracking Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers directly in SteamVR when the Quest headset is absent. So the supported answer is not established—not a universal claim that every third-party driver or experimental setup is impossible.

- Have PS VR2 Sense controllers: follow Sony’s documented setup with the PS VR2 headset, PC adapter, PlayStation VR2 app, SteamVR, and Bluetooth pairing.
- Have Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers: Meta’s documentation treats them as Quest-device controllers; it does not establish headset-free SteamVR tracking.
- Considering a Bluetooth dongle: do not treat one as a standalone tracking solution. Sony documents Bluetooth pairing as one part of the full PS VR2 PC setup.
The PS VR2 PC adapter is relevant if you are willing to use the PS VR2 headset with SteamVR. It does not remove the headset requirement in Sony’s documented configuration.
