On a personal Windows 11 PC, open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Pick a date under Pause updates, and choose an available end date. The pause lasts up to 35 days from the day you set it; it is temporary, and Windows resumes checking for updates when it ends.
Pause updates on a personal Windows 11 PC
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Under Pause updates, select Pick a date.
- Choose an available end date in the calendar.
Microsoft’s [current pause guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/pause-updates-in-windows-7e28ef7e-7c3a-47a7-8c4b-5e3a3e3d1f5f) limits the user-facing pause to 35 days from the current date. The calendar only offers dates within that period.
What happens when the pause ends?
When the selected date arrives, Windows checks for updates and may download and install the latest available updates. You can also resume updates manually before that date. Updates that require a restart are held during the pause, and Windows will not restart automatically to complete their installation until the pause ends. If an update is already in progress when you pause, Microsoft says that update is canceled.
Once the 35-day limit is reached, you must install the latest updates before you can pause again. You may then choose a new end date, but days from an earlier pause do not add to the new 35-day window. Microsoft’s [Windows Update FAQ](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-update-faq-8a903416-6f45-0718-f5c7-375e92dddeb2) says updates cannot be stopped entirely.

Can updates still install during a pause?
A pause does not guarantee that every update category will wait. Microsoft’s [Windows update guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-s-new-in-windows-updates-8f7e0c8c-1c88-4b9b-ae7c-0555d27d1686) says Defender security intelligence updates, AI component updates, critical or expedited driver updates, and emergency or out-of-band updates can install as soon as they are available. Many updates do not require a restart.
Microsoft also describes a “one restart a month” experience for listed Windows 11 versions, beginning with updates released on or after July 28, 2026. It is rolling out gradually, so it may not be available on every device. If an update has been waiting a long time, Windows may install a combined update and restart; this is not a universal guarantee for all PCs.

How organizations manage feature updates
On an organization-managed device, an administrator may use Windows Update policy controls to manage select feature introductions. Microsoft says potentially disruptive features are off by default on Windows Update-managed devices until the device enables the relevant policy. Features may also arrive through monthly updates rather than only through annual feature updates; see Microsoft’s [Windows continuous innovation guidance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/continuous-innovation).
These controls are for IT-managed devices and are not the same as the pause calendar in Settings. The sources cited here do not specify a step-by-step method for targeting a particular feature-update version or setting a deferral period. Administrators should use Microsoft’s current deployment-policy documentation for the device’s management method rather than treating the consumer pause as an equivalent control.

Check your Windows version’s support date
Deferring an update does not extend the support period for the Windows version already installed. As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro as reaching end of updates on October 13, 2026, while Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027. Check the support date for your own version and edition before deciding to delay an update; Microsoft’s [Windows lifecycle information](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-11-home-and-pro) provides edition-specific dates.
