Neither cloud backup nor replication protects against every kind of failure. Replication can keep a current copy available for failover; backup gives you retained recovery points that may let you return to a state before deletion, corruption, or ransomware. For important workloads, the stronger design is usually both, configured and tested against the business’s recovery needs.
What is the difference between cloud backup and replication?
Replication synchronizes data between copies, often continuously or near-continuously. Its main purpose is availability: if a system or location fails, another copy may be promoted or used for failover. Backup captures recovery points and retains them so you can restore data or a workload to an earlier state.
Microsoft Learn puts the distinction plainly: “Replication isn’t the same as backup.” Its Redundancy, replication, and backup guidance explains that replication synchronizes changes rather than retaining old copies. If a user accidentally deletes a file and that deletion is synchronized, the replicas may lose it too.
Which one protects against each kind of failure?
| Failure or need | Replication | Backup |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure or site outage | Can support continuity or failover to another live copy, depending on the architecture. | Can restore service, but recovery involves restoring data and possibly deploying infrastructure. |
| Accidental deletion | The deletion may propagate to replicas. | A retained recovery point from before the deletion may restore the data. |
| Corruption or software error | Corrupt changes may be synchronized. | A usable, protected point from before the incident may allow recovery. |
| Ransomware or destructive access | May be vulnerable if the attacker or compromised identity can alter production and replicas. | Can provide a recovery path if copies, retention, and administrative access are suitably protected. |
| Fast recovery with little data loss | May help meet aggressive continuity targets, with design tradeoffs. | Recovery-point frequency and restore time determine what is achievable. |
These are general patterns, not guarantees for a particular service. Behavior depends on the provider, workload, configuration, consistency mode, region, and recovery procedure.

How should you choose: availability or point-in-time recovery?
Start with the failure you need to withstand, then define two targets for each workload:
- RPO (recovery point objective): how old the latest usable recovery point can be, which determines how much data loss is tolerable.
- RTO (recovery time objective): how long service can remain unavailable before it must be restored.
Replication is often considered when downtime or data loss must be minimized and a failover path is justified. Backup and restore may suit a workload that can tolerate a longer recovery, provided the organization can restore within its RTO. The AWS Well-Architected Framework describes recovery options from backup/restore to pilot light, warm standby, and active/active, with differing cost and complexity. More demanding designs can require continuously running infrastructure and synchronization; active/active across regions can also introduce write conflicts. See AWS REL13-BP02: Use defined recovery strategies to meet the recovery objectives.

For each workload, check the actual recovery path rather than relying on a product label. A replica may need promotion, routing changes, or application validation. A backup restore may require target infrastructure, data transfer, permissions, and application checks. A design only meets its targets if those tasks fit the time and data-loss limits you set.
Why a replica is not automatically an independent backup
A replica can improve availability while sharing the same exposure to harmful changes as production. If deletion, corruption, or compromised credentials can affect both copies, replication may reproduce the incident rather than provide a clean recovery point. Backup is useful only when the organization retains points that predate the incident and protects them from the same destructive path.

Consider independence in both geography and administration. Depending on the threat and workload, that may mean separate accounts, projects, subscriptions, or administrative controls, alongside geographically separated copies. AWS notes that replicated data may still need backup at the recovery site in relevant strategies; replication alone may not protect against corruption or destruction. Its guidance is at Step 1. Implement a backup strategy.
How to make cloud backups more resilient to ransomware
Use immutability or other protections when they fit the workload, and ensure retention cannot be casually shortened or recovery points deleted by the same identity that manages production. Validate how administrators can recover data without first weakening the controls that protect it.

Provider features are specific, not universal. Google Cloud documents backup vaults with WORM immutability, retention controls, granular restores, and cross-region or cross-project recovery options for listed Google Cloud and hybrid workloads in its Backup and DR overview. Microsoft’s Azure architecture guidance describes separate backup subscriptions and regions, locked immutable recovery points, and approval controls for sensitive actions. These are controls organizations must configure and validate, not automatic protections for every workload. Microsoft also cautions that locking immutability is irreversible for the retention period, so retention settings need careful validation before locking. A successful backup job does not prove that an application can be restored within its target. Schedule recovery exercises that use the actual workload and recovery points, and verify permissions, application consistency, runbooks, and the restored service. Microsoft recommends regular backup and restore verification; Azure’s ransomware-resilient architecture guidance also notes that testing measures RTO and RPO. Record how long recovery takes and what data is available, then adjust the design if it misses the required targets.

A practical decision checklist
- List the failure scenarios that matter: infrastructure outage, regional disruption, deletion, corruption, software error, or ransomware.
- Set an RPO and RTO for each workload based on the business impact of data loss and downtime.
- Choose a failover or replication pattern if availability targets require it; verify its consistency behavior, dependencies, and operational complexity.
- Retain point-in-time backups for recovery from harmful changes, and check whether production identities or actions can also alter those copies.
- Apply suitable immutability, retention, geographic separation, and administrative separation for the threats you need to address.
- Exercise the complete restore or failover procedure regularly and compare the measured recovery with the workload’s targets.
For a modest workload that can tolerate a longer recovery, backup/restore may be a reasonable priority. A workload with stricter continuity requirements may need replication-based disaster recovery, while retaining independent backups for recovery from incidents that replicas can reproduce.
