A Lenovo error or malfunction does not automatically mean a part has failed. Check when the problem began, identify the affected device in Windows, compare its driver with Lenovo’s listing for your exact model, and run Lenovo diagnostics. A driver issue is more likely when the timing and device status point to software; a hardware fault becomes more plausible when an appropriate test reports a component problem or the fault persists after suitable software checks. Neither clue alone guarantees the diagnosis.
Start with the symptom and when it began
Note what stopped working, whether the problem affects one component or the whole PC, whether it began after a Windows or driver update, and whether it remains after restarting. An issue that starts soon after an update is a reason to investigate the relevant driver, not proof that the update caused it. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts can result from hardware, a driver, or software (Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts and stop codes).
If the specific problem is screen flickering that began after a display-driver update, Microsoft documents rolling back that driver as a troubleshooting option. That advice applies to this display-flicker context, not to every Lenovo fault (Microsoft’s screen-flicker troubleshooting steps).
Check the affected device in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager in Windows and find the component that is not working—for example, the display adapter, network adapter, or audio device.
- Open the device’s properties and read the Device status message and any error code. Look up the exact code in Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code reference; the suggested remedy depends on the code.
- In the device properties, open the Driver tab and note the installed driver version. Lenovo’s instructions explain how to compare it with the driver offered for the specific Lenovo device (Lenovo: Which driver should I download?).
An error code is evidence to investigate, not a standalone hardware diagnosis. Microsoft says Code 1 indicates a missing or incorrectly configured driver and recommends updating it. Code 43 means Windows stopped the device after it reported a problem; Microsoft includes driver reinstall steps and recommends consulting the device manufacturer. Code 24 can involve incorrect installation, hardware failure, or the need for a new driver. Those different possibilities are why the code-specific instructions matter.

Choose a driver update route that matches your model
Use a Lenovo driver only after confirming it matches your exact model and Windows version. Lenovo’s driver instructions show how to identify hardware and compare its installed version with the model-specific listing. Microsoft likewise advises checking the hardware manufacturer’s website when Windows Update does not find a compatible driver (Microsoft’s driver guidance).
- Lenovo Vantage: Lenovo describes Vantage as a way to scan components and check performance health; availability and options can vary by device.
- Lenovo System Update: This is a Windows-only route for supported product families, not a universal tool for every Lenovo device. Check Lenovo’s product-family and Windows requirements before using it. Lenovo’s guidance says to run Windows Update first where applicable because System Update may depend on Windows components (Lenovo System Update information).
- Lenovo Support: If the software route is unavailable or you want to verify a specific driver, search for the exact product and operating system on Lenovo Support.
A driver offered for a different model or Windows version is not a safe substitute simply because its name looks similar. The cited guidance does not establish a need for a third-party driver-updater utility.

Run Lenovo diagnostics to gather hardware evidence
Lenovo Vantage can perform hardware scans and performance health checks. Lenovo Diagnostics can test components, but use the download page to confirm compatibility with your machine before installing it. The page listed Lenovo Diagnostics for Windows version 5.26.0, released March 17, 2026, with support listed for Windows 10 and Windows 11 64-bit and Windows 11 ARM 64-bit, subject to device compatibility and the page’s exclusions (Lenovo Diagnostics for Windows download and compatibility details).
A test result can help you decide whether to seek service, but it does not by itself specify the repair your individual PC needs. If Windows does not start, use Lenovo’s diagnostic decision guide to find the recommended bootable option for the machine and Windows generation; its guidance includes UEFI diagnostics for certain newer Windows-based machines (Lenovo diagnostic solutions).

When to contact Lenovo about repair
Check Lenovo Support for the exact model, warranty status, service availability, and your region if a diagnostic reports a component fault, the same symptom continues after relevant software troubleshooting, or the PC cannot boot. The appropriate next step depends on the model and the evidence available; a general error message cannot establish that a part must be replaced.
