Pause before sending money or connecting a wallet. Guaranteed returns, pressure to act quickly, unsolicited investment coaching, and demands for extra fees to withdraw are serious warning signs. For a token, verify its full contract or mint address on the correct network against the project’s independently reached official documentation. A familiar name, ticker, wallet balance, listing, or verification badge does not prove that a token is genuine or a sound investment.

How crypto investment scams and fake token listings work

Investment pitches and fake dashboards

A scam may start with a social-media message, direct message, dating-app conversation, or supposed investment manager offering help. The pitch may promise fast or guaranteed profits, use fake testimonials, or pressure you to act before you can check the claims. A fake site or app can display invented account growth to encourage larger deposits. When you try to withdraw, the operator may block access or demand another payment for a supposed tax, fee, or penalty. The Federal Trade Commission’s investment-scam guidance describes these warning patterns.

Imitation tokens

Anyone who deploys a token contract can choose its displayed name and symbol. A fake asset can therefore copy the name or ticker of an established project while using a different contract address. A wallet balance, apparent holders, transfer activity, or unsolicited airdrop does not authenticate the asset; token-contract behavior can create misleading appearances. Ethereum.org’s guide to identifying scam tokens explains why the address matters more than the display name.

Address poisoning

This is a separate but related risk: an attacker sends a transaction or token from an address resembling one you use, hoping you will later copy the impostor address from transaction history. Check the entire recipient address against a trusted source; matching only the first and last characters is not enough. See the FBI’s cryptocurrency impersonation warning.

Warning signs that should stop you

  • A promise of guaranteed returns, unusually large payouts, or “little to no risk.” Investments involve risk; the FTC says scammers may promise big money, guaranteed income, or guaranteed returns.
  • Urgency, secrecy, or discouragement from checking the offer independently.
  • An unsolicited person—particularly an online romantic contact—offering to manage your crypto or teach you how to invest.
  • A polished dashboard showing gains that you cannot verify through independent custody, transaction, and withdrawal records.
  • A demand for additional money to release funds or pay a supposed penalty.
  • A token sharing a known project’s name or ticker but not its official contract or mint address.
  • A wallet or explorer balance, listing, badge, or apparent liquidity presented as proof of safety or value.
  • A destination address that resembles a saved address but differs in the middle characters.

The scale is significant, though reported figures are not a complete count of actual fraud. The FTC said investment scams caused $4.6 billion in reported losses in 2023, more than any other reported fraud category (FTC, 2024). In a 2022 data spotlight, it reported that more than 46,000 people had reported over $1 billion in cryptocurrency losses to scams since the start of 2021; that is a report count and reported-loss figure, not a complete measure of incidents (FTC, 2022).

Verify an offer and token before you act

  1. Stop and check the offer independently. Do not let a countdown, “limited” allocation, romantic relationship, or apparent prior profit rush you. Search for the company, person, and token alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud,” or “complaint.” Compare multiple results; testimonials are not proof.
  2. Identify the exact asset and network. Record the full token contract address—or, for Solana, the mint address—and the blockchain where the project says the token exists. An address on one network does not identify an asset on another.
  3. Find the canonical address from the issuer. Navigate independently to the project’s known official site or documentation; do not rely on a link in a direct message, advertisement, or unsolicited support reply. Compare every character. Ethereum.org identifies the issuing organization as the best source for a genuine token address.
  4. Cross-check with the appropriate explorer. Inspect contract or mint details, transaction source, and any suspicious labels. Ethereum community explorer labels can help identify tokens already reported, but an explorer is not an authoritative source of truth. Solana Explorer aggregates independent verification providers; consult Solana’s token-verification documentation for how its verification model works.
  5. Use market data only as a clue. Ethereum.org notes that very low liquidity and extreme price impact can be suspicious. Neither liquidity nor a listing proves that the project is genuine or the investment is sound. Solana explicitly says verification is not an endorsement or a guarantee of a token’s value, safety, or legitimacy.
  6. Read wallet requests before signing. Do not sign a transaction or grant a token allowance if you do not understand the site, contract, asset, or consequences. Scam interfaces can imitate legitimate sites and prompt harmful transactions or allowances.
  7. Check the full recipient address separately. Compare it with the intended recipient’s address obtained independently. Do not trust a lookalike beginning and ending, or an address copied from unverified transaction history.

What each check can—and cannot—establish

Check What to compare What it tells you
Network The blockchain on which the project says the token exists Prevents treating addresses from different chains as interchangeable.
Full contract or mint address Every character against independently reached issuer documentation A strong token-identity check; names and symbols alone are not unique.
Address source Issuer site or documentation versus a social message, ad, or search result Helps avoid using an impersonator-controlled link.
Explorer and verification signals Contract or mint details, labels, and verification provider A useful cross-check; labels can be incomplete, and verification is not an endorsement.
Liquidity and trading behavior Pool depth and price impact Risk clues, not proof that a project is genuine or a sound investment.
Recipient address The entire intended destination address against an independently obtained address Helps reduce lookalike-address and address-poisoning errors.

What to do if you suspect a scam

  • Stop sending money, signing transactions, or sharing information with the suspected operator. Never provide a seed phrase or private key.
  • Preserve transaction IDs, wallet and recipient addresses, screenshots, website URLs, and relevant messages.
  • In the U.S., report investment scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For suspected securities-related fraud, use the SEC complaint channel. The FBI directs victims of cryptocurrency impersonation scams to IC3.gov. These are U.S. reporting routes; other countries have their own authorities.
  • Contact a wallet or exchange platform only through contact details independently verified on its official site.
  • Ignore unsolicited recovery or account-unlocking offers, especially anyone demanding a new fee. The cited agencies do not promise recovery or reversal of completed crypto transfers, and a report does not guarantee funds will be returned.
