The optic provides magnification; a phone adapter or camera adapter helps hold the camera in position. Results depend on alignment, light, focus, magnification, and camera stability.
What digiscoping is and how it works
Digiscoping is photography through an optical instrument. You align a phone or dedicated camera with the viewing eyepiece of binoculars or a spotting scope, allowing the optic to magnify the scene before it reaches the camera. Kowa describes phone-based digiscoping as attaching a mobile phone camera to a spotting scope and calls alignment with the optic’s axis the collimation method. Kowa’s FAQ also uses the term for photography with a digital camera attached at a spotting-scope eyepiece.
A spotting scope can therefore act like a long-telephoto system, but it does not guarantee a close, sharp photograph in every situation. The camera must be aligned with the eyepiece, and the available light, magnification, focus, and movement all affect the image.
Can you connect a phone to binoculars or a spotting scope?
Yes, if you use an adapter that fits both your phone and the particular optic or eyepiece. An adapter holds the phone steady and positions one phone-camera lens over one eyepiece. Some setups combine a universal phone holder with a separate eyepiece-specific adapter; others are designed for a particular phone model. ZEISS describes its smartphone and eyepiece adapter components with supported scope models, while Kowa outlines dedicated-fit and universal-fit approaches.
#1 Best Overall
- CAPTURE IMAGES AND VIDEO THROUGH YOUR SCOPE: The Celestron Smartphone Adapter connects your phone to your telescope, spotting scope, binocular, monocular & microscope! You can capture amazing images & video through the eyepiece to share with friends.
- UNIVERSAL SMARTPHONE ADAPTER: Fits a wide range of smartphones, including the latest iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel models — even with most cases on.
- EASY TO USE: Simply place your phone in the adapter, center your phone’s camera over the eyepiece, and use the knobs to secure the adapter in place.
- STURDY CONSTRUCTION: Durable metal frame and polymer body for worry-free use in the field — perfect for star parties or birding events.
- COMPATIBLE EYEPIECES: Smartphone adapter fits almost any eyepiece from 29 millimeters to 45 millimeters in diameter, including telescopes equipped with 1.25” eyepieces.
Before buying, check the adapter’s stated compatibility with your phone model and the exact binocular or scope eyepiece. A holder that fits the phone may still fail to align securely with the optic, and an eyepiece adapter is not necessarily interchangeable with another model.
Ways to attach a camera
Smartphone adapter
For most phone setups, mount the phone in its holder, align the camera lens with the eyepiece, and secure the adapter. The specific assembly varies by design. A correct fit matters because even slight misalignment can make framing difficult or produce a dark border around the image.

- Capture What You See Through Your Scope — TRIDAPTOR helps connect your smartphone to most spotting scope, telescope, monocular or microscope eyepieces, so you can capture and share birds, wildlife, targets, celestial objects and distant scenes.
- Precise 3-Axis Alignment for Cleaner Shots (Patent Pending) — This 3-axis digiscoping adapter lets you adjust your phone left/right, up/down and forward/back to line up the camera with the eyepiece. The Z-axis adjustment helps reach the right eye relief, reducing dark edges or vignetting for clearer photos and videos.
- All-Metal Build, No Phone Sagging — Rigid aluminum construction helps keep your phone steady and aligned, unlike flimsy plastic telescope phone adapters that can flex, tilt or lose position. Rubber pads help protect your phone and eyepiece from scratches.
- Shoot Without Touching the Scope — Use the included Bluetooth remote with this phone scope adapter to take photos or videos without tapping your phone and shaking the image, making it easier to capture sharper shots and share your view.
- Fits Most Phones & Many Standard Eyepieces — This smart phone adapter for telescope fits most iPhone and Android smartphones from 2.36"–3.44" wide / 60–87.5 mm. It also fits eyepieces with an outer diameter of 0.86"–2.4" / 22–61 mm.
Dedicated camera
A DSLR or mirrorless camera can be coupled to a spotting scope using a telephoto adapter or a compatible eyepiece and photo-adapter combination. Some systems require a camera-specific T-mount. Opticron describes these camera-adapter approaches. Focus is adjusted on the scope. At high magnification relative to the scope’s aperture, shutter speeds may need to be slower, increasing the risk of blur from camera movement.
How to get a clearer, easier-to-frame image
- Start at lower magnification. Use a low-magnification wide-angle eyepiece or set a zoom eyepiece to its minimum. High zoom narrows the field of view and makes it harder to find and keep a subject in frame. Swarovski’s digiscoping guidance likewise advises beginners not to use too much zoom and warns that slight camera shake can blur an image.
- Align and secure the camera. Center the phone’s camera lens over the eyepiece and tighten the adapter as its instructions specify. Check that it remains stable before aiming at a subject.
- Focus deliberately. Focus with the scope, then lock the phone’s focus if it keeps hunting. Kowa recommends focus lock in its phone-digiscoping tips. When possible, pre-focus on a stationary object where a moving subject is likely to appear.
- Reduce shake. Avoid touching or bumping the setup while capturing an image. A remote shutter release or cable release can reduce movement caused by pressing the camera button; Kowa lists these as useful options in its digiscoping guidance.
- Adjust the optics if you see a dark ring. A black circular border, or vignetting, often means the camera is not capturing the full image through the eyepiece. Recheck alignment and adjust the eyepiece or optical zoom to change the framing. Opticron notes that device zoom can reduce vignetting in its adapter guidance; Kowa advises using eyepiece zoom rather than digital zoom for this, since digital zoom reduces image quality.
Why magnification has practical limits
More magnification is not automatically better for photography. It reduces the field of view, making it harder to locate and track a subject. Limited light can constrain exposure, while shallow depth of focus makes precise focusing more demanding. Camera or scope movement is also more visible at high magnification. These factors can limit sharpness and framing even when the camera is attached correctly.

- UNIVERSAL SMARTPHONE ADAPTER: Fits a wide range of smartphones, including the latest iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel models — even with most cases on. Tension adjustments hold even the heaviest phones firmly in place.
- 3-AXIS PRECISION ALIGNMENT: Use the patented three-directional adjustment knobs (X-, Y-, and Z-axis) to center your phone’s camera over the eyepiece.
- STURDY CONSTRUCTION: Durable metal frame and polymer body for worry-free use in the field. Strong spring-loaded slider makes it easy to swap phones — perfect for star parties or birding events.
- COMPATIBLE EYEPIECES: NexYZ fits almost any eyepiece from 35 millimeters to 60 millimeters in diameter, including telescopes equipped with 1.25” and 2” eyepieces. Also includes two adapters for microscopes.
Kowa illustrates the possible scale of magnification with a calculation: a 22 mm phone-camera focal length multiplied by a 25× eyepiece zoom gives 550 mm equivalent focal length; dividing 550 mm by 35 mm gives 15.7× compared with a full-frame camera. This is an example calculation in Kowa’s guide, not a universal result for other phone-and-scope combinations or a measured image-quality rating.
