To update Lenovo drivers and BIOS safely in Windows 11, first identify your exact Lenovo model or machine type. Run Windows Update, then use Lenovo Vantage, Lenovo System Update on supported systems, or the model-specific Lenovo support page. For a BIOS update, confirm the package matches your computer, read its README, use reliable power, and let the flash and restart finish without interruption.
How to Update Lenovo Drivers and BIOS Safely in Windows 11
The right update depends on the exact Lenovo computer. Lenovo warns that installing BIOS intended for another model may stop the system from working. Start with model identification rather than searching for a general-purpose BIOS file. See Lenovo’s BIOS update guide.
1. Identify your Lenovo model
- Find the computer’s exact product name or machine type.
- Open Lenovo Support, select the matching product, and go to Drivers & Software.
- For a firmware update, select BIOS/UEFI and choose the correct operating system, such as Windows 11.
Check the package’s supported products and operating systems before downloading. Do not assume that a package for a similar-looking ThinkPad or other Lenovo family fits your computer.
Choose an update route
Lenovo provides more than one route; which one is appropriate depends on product support and the instructions for the specific package.

| Route | When to use it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Lenovo Vantage | When Vantage is available for your Lenovo computer and offers the update you need. | Confirm the proposed update applies to your model; follow the utility’s instructions. |
| Lenovo System Update | On supported ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation, and Lenovo V, B, K, and E-Series systems. | Lenovo recommends running Windows Update first. Confirm that System Update supports your product and offers the desired package. |
| Manual Lenovo Support download | When you want to select a specific driver or BIOS package from your product’s support page, or its README requires a particular installation method. | Match the model and operating system, then read the package details and README before installing. |
Lenovo identifies Vantage as a way to update BIOS and drivers, and System Update as a way to install Lenovo drivers, BIOS, and applications on supported systems. Its guidance does not establish one best route for every model. See the Lenovo instructions for the applicable route.
Run Windows Update before Lenovo System Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install the Windows updates offered for your PC.
- Restart if Windows requests it. Then open Lenovo System Update, if supported, and review its available Lenovo updates.
For driver updates, Vantage, supported System Update, and the model-specific Drivers & Software page are Lenovo’s update routes. Review what each proposes rather than installing a package simply because its name sounds relevant.

Review the package before installing
For each proposed update, verify the supported model and Windows version on the Lenovo product page. Before a BIOS update, read that package’s README. Lenovo says package documentation can describe installation steps, supported products and operating systems, version identification, changes, and limitations. Follow package-specific instructions: download options and installation procedures can vary between Lenovo systems.
Some product listings label individual packages Critical, Recommended, or Optional. Treat those labels as applying to the particular package on that product page; they are not universal ratings for every Lenovo update.

Prepare for a BIOS update
- Connect the computer to a reliable power source. For a laptop or other portable device, Lenovo advises having the battery fully charged as well.
- Use the package intended for your exact model and follow its README.
- Do not begin if you cannot keep the device powered and undisturbed until the update finishes.
A BIOS flash interrupted by a freeze, crash, or power loss can corrupt the firmware and prevent the computer from starting. Lenovo’s warning is direct: “If the system freezes, crashes, or loses power during the update process, the BIOS or UEFI firmware may be corrupted.” Lenovo Support
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Install BIOS and let the process finish
- Use the installation method stated in the exact package README. Lenovo’s general Windows procedure describes running the downloaded BIOS package, but the steps can differ by system.
- Allow the flashing program to complete. Do not shut down, unplug, or force-restart the computer during the update.
- Wait for the automatic reboot described in Lenovo’s general procedure, and allow the computer to finish starting.
If you are unsure whether a package matches your computer or what to do during an unexpected interruption, stop and consult the model’s Lenovo support page and package instructions rather than trying another model’s firmware.

Why BIOS versions differ between Lenovo models
BIOS version numbers and release dates belong to particular model groups, not to Lenovo laptops as a whole. For example, when accessed on 4 October 2026, Lenovo’s listing for ThinkPad T14 Gen 3, P14s Gen 3, T16 Gen 1, and P16s Gen 1 showed BIOS package version 1.47/1.27 for Windows 11/10, dated 14 May 2026, with Recommended severity (Lenovo listing). A separate listing for ThinkPad T14 Gen 4, T16 Gen 2, P14s Gen 4, and P16s Gen 2 showed BIOS 1.51 / EC 1.35 for Windows 11/10, dated 22 September 2026, with Critical severity (Lenovo listing). These are examples for those listed groups only; check your own product page for its applicable package.
