Break them in before your trip, and match their weight and support to your planned walks. A town stroll, a maintained path and a rough multi-day trek do not call for identical footwear; glacier travel requires separate, activity-specific equipment.
Start with your route, not a boot label
Think about where and how long you will walk. A short urban walk or maintained path may not call for a heavy hiking boot. Wet ground, uneven trails and longer routes make water protection, a secure fit and dependable traction more important. The Icelandic Touring Association describes the Laugavegur trail as including rocky paths, snow-covered sections and river crossings, illustrating why footwear for a demanding trek is different from footwear for sightseeing. Check the current conditions and access for your specific route near departure. Icelandic weather can change, and Laugavegur access depends on weather, snow and road openings. Footwear cannot compensate for unsafe conditions or a closed route. Check trail access information and the Environment Agency’s traveler safety guidance.
What to look for in a walking boot
Secure, comfortable fit
Fit matters more than a feature list: a boot can be waterproof and supportive yet still rub or crowd your foot. Try it with the socks you expect to wear, then walk long enough to notice pressure, heel movement, rubbing or pinched toes. Reykjanes’ volcano-hike guidance advises choosing boots that fit well and wearing them in before the hike. Water protection
For rainy walks, muddy paths and other wet-ground conditions, waterproof hiking footwear is a sensible priority. Visit Reykjavík recommends waterproof hiking boots, as does the Icelandic Touring Association for Laugavegur’s varied trail surfaces. Visit Reykjavík’s hiking gear advice.
Traction for the terrain
Look for a robust outsole that feels secure on the kind of uneven trail you plan to walk. Visit Reykjavík recommends a robust sole for traction on varied terrain. That general advice is not a guarantee of grip on ice, and the cited guidance does not compare tread compounds or certify particular boots for icy surfaces. Ankle coverage and support
Visit Reykjavík recommends ankle support for hiking. Higher-cut boots are one way to get more coverage and structure, which may be useful on rough ground or for walkers who prefer that feel. They are not a universal requirement for every town walk or maintained path: consider the route, how the boot fits and whether the added structure is comfortable for you. Choose socks and test the combination
Visit Reykjavík recommends moisture-wicking and thermal socks with hiking boots. Bring a suitable pair and try it with the boots before travel, since the sock-and-boot combination affects how the footwear feels. Do not confuse hiking boots with glacier equipment
Ordinary waterproof hiking boots do not make glacier travel safe. Iceland’s Environment Agency warns that walking on glacier tongues without crampons and other ice-climbing equipment is dangerous. It also advises against glacier trips without the necessary experience and knowledge, and recommends organized trips with experienced guides as the safest option. Follow the qualified guide’s requirements for the specific activity; do not treat everyday trail footwear as a substitute. Read the Environment Agency’s glacier and travel safety advice.

- Wet or varied hiking trails: Choose waterproof hiking footwear with a robust, secure-feeling sole.
- Rougher terrain or a longer trek: Consider whether ankle coverage and added structure suit your route and feel comfortable on your foot.
- Before departure: Test the boots with your intended socks and wear them in; check route access and conditions close to your trip.
- Glacier activity: Arrange appropriate guided activity and equipment rather than relying on ordinary hiking boots.
