A requested window size is not a guarantee of identical pixels across browsers, operating systems, or remote environments.
Set the window size before capturing
Selenium lets you set the browser window dimensions. Its official window-management guide demonstrates a size of 1024 × 768; treat that as an example, not a recommended size for every test. In Python, the corresponding API is set_window_size(width, height). Selenium’s window and tab documentation and the Python WebDriver API for Selenium 4.50.0 document these controls.
Set the window size before navigating or taking the screenshot so the page loads under the dimensions you intend to test. Selenium calls this a window size; do not assume the values are guaranteed CSS viewport dimensions. Browser chrome and the execution environment can affect the page area available to render.
Python example: capture the current browser view
Install Selenium and make a WebDriver available for your browser, then run:

Choose the screenshot target that matches the test
A driver screenshot and an element screenshot capture different targets. Use the driver method for the current browsing context; use a located element’s screenshot method when the evidence should be limited to a component such as a chart, button, or panel. Selenium documents both approaches in its window and tab documentation.

Capture one element in Python

driver.quit()The selector must match an element present on the page. If it does not, locating it raises an error; use the selector for the component you actually intend to capture. The output is focused on that element rather than the whole current browser view.
Capture the entire document only with supported APIs
A current-window screenshot is not the same requirement as a full-document screenshot. The reviewed Selenium Python API documents full-page screenshot methods for Firefox, including get_full_page_screenshot_as_file and save_full_page_screenshot. Do not assume those methods exist for every browser and binding: check the documentation for the exact browser and Selenium language binding you run. The Python Firefox WebDriver API for Selenium 4.50.0 describes its full-page screenshot methods.

For Java, Selenium’s HasFullPageScreenshot interface lists FirefoxDriver as its known implementing class and is marked beta. Confirm the current API status and compatibility before depending on it in a test suite. See the Java interface documentation.

Make results repeatable across runs
Controlling the API call is only part of controlling the image. Selenium’s documentation describes the available controls but does not promise identical viewport pixels across browsers, operating systems, browser chrome, or remote setups. Record the environment alongside each screenshot so a changed image can be investigated rather than attributed vaguely to “Selenium.”
- Browser and browser version
- Driver and Selenium binding/version
- Requested window width and height
- Capture target: current view, element, or full document
- Runner details, including whether the browser is local or remote
Inspect the image produced by the actual CI or remote-browser runner. Check its pixel dimensions and visual content instead of assuming the requested window size produced the intended page viewport. The Python API documentation is for Selenium 4.50.0; the Selenium window-management page reports a last-modified date of May 11, 2026.

Troubleshoot screenshots with the wrong size or content
- The image is not the dimensions you expected: verify the requested window dimensions are set before capture, then inspect the saved image in the same runner. Window dimensions should not be silently treated as guaranteed CSS viewport dimensions.
- The screenshot omits the rest of a long page: the ordinary driver screenshot captures the current browsing context, not necessarily the entire document. Use a documented full-page API for your specific browser and binding; the reviewed Python full-page methods are Firefox-specific.
- The image includes too much page: locate the component and use its element screenshot method instead of the driver screenshot.
- The element screenshot fails: check that the selector identifies an element on the loaded page and that the intended component is present before capture.
- Images differ between local and CI runs: compare browser, driver, Selenium version, requested dimensions, capture target, and runner setup; inspect the actual output rather than assuming the API guarantees matching pixels.
- A full-page method is unavailable: check support for the exact browser, binding, and version. Do not treat Firefox-specific Python documentation or Java’s beta interface as universal Selenium support.
