Use Voice Typing to dictate into a text box; use Voice Access when you also want to navigate Windows and control apps by voice. Voice Typing is a focused dictation feature. Voice Access combines dictation with spoken commands for interacting with your PC.
What’s the difference between Voice Typing and Voice Access?
Microsoft describes Voice Typing as a tool for authoring text by dictation. Voice Access adds commands, so you can dictate and interact with Windows and apps using speech. It supports tasks such as opening or switching apps, browsing, and reading or writing email. Microsoft’s Voice Access FAQ explains the distinction.
| Your task | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dictate into the text field you are already using | Voice Typing | It starts with Windows+H and requires a text box to have focus. |
| Navigate Windows or work across apps by voice | Voice Access | It can start outside a text field and includes commands for apps and controls. |
| Dictate, then select or edit text using speech | Voice Access | It combines dictation with spoken text-editing commands. |
How do you turn on each speech tool?
Start Voice Typing
- Place the cursor in the text box where you want the words to appear.
- Press Windows+H. On a device with a touch keyboard, you can also use its microphone key.
- Begin speaking into the focused field.
Start Voice Access
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Speech, or search for Voice Access from Start.
- Follow the setup steps, including selecting language files and configuring a microphone.
- Use its default mode for commands and dictation, or choose a mode suited to the task.
Unlike Voice Typing, Voice Access can be started when a text field is not focused. Microsoft provides a getting-started guide and a command reference. New users can also practice with Microsoft’s interactive guide.
Can Voice Access control your computer?
Yes. Voice Access is designed for both text entry and spoken control of Windows and apps. Its default mode accepts commands and dictation. You can switch to commands-only mode when you want speech interpreted as commands, or dictation-only mode when you want speech entered as text in an editable field. For selecting or editing text by voice as well as navigating controls, Voice Access is the more suitable choice.

Does Voice Access work offline?
Voice Access requires an internet connection during initial setup to download the selected language files. Microsoft says recognition then runs on-device, allowing you to use Voice Access without an internet connection after setup. Microsoft’s setup instructions cover the download and microphone configuration. The cited documentation does not establish whether Voice Typing works offline, so do not assume it has the same offline behavior.
Which Windows versions support them?
Microsoft lists Voice Typing for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Voice Access is a Windows 11 feature available in version 22H2 and later. If you are choosing between these two tools on a Windows 10 PC, Voice Typing is the applicable option. See Microsoft’s FAQ and Voice Access documentation.

Availability is specific to the listed language variants, so check Microsoft’s current setup page for your language before relying on it.
