Saving an image from a webpage and converting it to JPEG are two different steps. First download the image; then, if it is not already a JPEG, open it in an image app and export a JPEG copy. Renaming a file to end in .jpg does not convert its contents.
Save the image from the webpage
Chrome on a computer
- Right-click the image.
- Select Save image as.
- Choose a folder and save the file.
This downloads the image resource the site provides; it does not make that resource a JPEG. The resulting format depends on what the site serves. Google Chrome Help explains the save command.
Safari on Mac
Control-click the image and choose Save Image to Downloads or Save Image As. Some images, including certain webpage background images, cannot be saved this way. Apple documents Safari’s save options and limitation.
Check whether the downloaded file is already JPEG
Open the file in an image app or inspect its file information to identify its format. A .jpg or .jpeg extension alone is not proof: changing the filename does not re-encode a PNG, WebP, or other image as JPEG. WebP is one format you may encounter online, but a website can serve different formats in different circumstances; do not infer the exact format from the page alone. If the file is already JPEG, you can use it as-is. Otherwise, export a new copy using an image app’s format control. Keep the original if you may need its transparency or want to preserve the source file.
Convert an image to JPEG on Mac with Preview
- Open the downloaded image in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Choose JPEG from the Format menu.
- Adjust quality if desired, then choose a name and save location.
- Click Save.
Preview creates a JPEG copy; it does not make the original disappear. Apple also documents converting multiple selected images in one Preview window. See Apple’s Preview conversion instructions.

Export a JPEG on iPhone with Preview
- Open the image in Preview.
- Tap the actions menu beside the filename and choose Export.
- Select JPEG.
- Adjust the size or quality control if needed, choose where to save, and save the exported file.
Interface details can vary with the installed iOS version. Apple’s guide describes the JPEG export and optional size adjustment. View Apple’s iPhone Preview instructions.
What JPEG changes—and when not to use it
- Transparency: JPEG does not retain transparent areas. If the image has a transparent background, keep the original or export to a format with alpha support, such as PNG.
- Quality: JPEG export may reduce image quality. Use the app’s quality control when available, and keep the original if preserving its source quality matters.
- Compatibility: JPEG is useful when a destination specifically requests it or broad compatibility is needed, but it is not a lossless substitute for every image format.
Apple’s export controls distinguish JPEG’s size or quality options from alpha controls available for formats such as PNG, HEIC, and TIFF. Apple’s Mac Preview guide and iPhone Preview guide describe those options. Apple also documents manually exporting HEIF images as JPEG through Photos or Preview on Mac; the “Most Compatible” camera setting concerns future photos taken on an Apple device, not web-image downloads. If the image will not save or convert
- No save option in Safari: The image may be a page background or otherwise unavailable through the image context menu. Try the site’s own download option if it offers one.
- The saved file is still WebP or PNG: The browser downloaded the offered format. Use an image app’s Export or Save As format control and explicitly choose JPEG.
- The image loses a transparent background: That is expected when exporting to JPEG. Keep the original or choose PNG or another alpha-supporting format.
- The result looks worse: JPEG can reduce quality. Export again with a higher quality setting if available, or use the original format when JPEG is not required.
- You are on Windows, Android, or another browser: Menu labels and built-in conversion steps depend on the app and version. Save the image, open it in a trusted editor that supports JPEG export, and select JPEG in that editor rather than renaming the file.
