Use screenshots to show what an AI agent’s browser actually looked like at a meaningful point in a run, then pair them with structured page observations and a check of the application’s final state. A screenshot is useful evidence of appearance—not, by itself, proof that the agent read the right text, clicked the intended control, or completed the task.
Choose evidence that matches the claim
Start by deciding what a reviewer needs to verify. A report about a layout defect needs a visual capture; a report about which button was available or what text appeared needs structured page data. When the report covers both, include both kinds of evidence and connect them to the same task and point in the run.

Playwright’s screenshot guidance describes screenshots as complementary to accessibility snapshots, while Playwright MCP documents structured snapshots and screenshot capture options. For visually rich pages, combining the two helps a reviewer see the appearance and understand the page structure (Playwright screenshots; Playwright MCP).
Capture the right area at the right point
Viewport screenshot
Capture the viewport when the claim concerns what was visible to the agent at that moment—for example, a dialog, an error message, or the current screen before an action. Record the point in the run and the relevant action or observation so reviewers can place it in context.

Element screenshot
Capture a specific component when the claim is about that component’s appearance, such as a chart, card, or form section. Use a structured snapshot or tool output alongside it if a reviewer must identify the element or read its text reliably.
Full-page screenshot
Use a full-page capture when the report depends on content below the fold or the page’s overall layout. Keep in mind that a long image may make small text harder to inspect; use an element or viewport capture as well when a particular detail must be legible.

Playwright supports viewport, element-targeted, and full-page screenshots, with documented format and resolution choices. Its MCP documentation also describes PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and ways to capture screenshots alongside accessibility snapshots. Choose the smallest scope and suitable output quality that preserve the detail relevant to the report.
Build a reviewable evidence trail
- State the claim. Write what the evidence is meant to support: a visible defect, a displayed result, or a completed workflow.
- Capture at a meaningful point. Take the screenshot when the relevant state is visible. For a sequence, capture only the transitions that matter rather than collecting indiscriminate images.
- Save structured observations where identity or text matters. Preserve the accessibility snapshot, tool output, or other structured result used to identify controls and read content. A screenshot should not be used as a substitute for stable element references.
- Attach run context. Associate each artifact with enough information to identify the run and why the capture was made, such as the task step or event and a timestamp or sequence number. This is a reporting practice, not a vendor-mandated metadata format.
- Verify the actual application outcome. Inspect the resulting state—such as a changed record or displayed confirmation—rather than treating the agent’s final answer or an intermediate screenshot as conclusive.
- Present evidence with its limits. In the report, distinguish what the image visibly shows from what structured data or application inspection establishes.
OpenAI’s computer-use guidance emphasizes bounded, verified execution and checking the actual outcome rather than relying only on the agent’s final response. It also warns that computer-use actions can affect real accounts and data (OpenAI computer-use guidance).

Keep screenshot capture safe and useful
- Restrict the environment. Give the agent only the access and data needed for the task; use a test environment when practical.
- Treat screen content as untrusted. A page can contain instructions or content that should not override the task’s controls.
- Bound and control execution. Set appropriate limits, retain the ability to cancel, and require user confirmation for consequential actions.
- Limit capture and access. Capture only relevant screens and restrict who can view stored images; screenshots may expose account or personal data.
- Define retention and deletion. Decide how long artifacts remain available and how they are removed. Policies vary by product and integration.
Retention details are product-specific. For example, OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent help page says chats, browsing history, and associated screenshots are retained until the user deletes them, and that deleted chats and screenshots are removed from OpenAI systems within 90 days. It also describes data-use conditions for Plus and Pro, including an opt-in condition for model improvement. Do not assume those terms apply to other agent systems; check the policy for the particular product (OpenAI ChatGPT agent help).

Common reporting mistakes to avoid
- Using an image to prove a click. A screenshot can show a resulting appearance but does not establish which element the agent targeted. Include structured element references or tool observations for interaction identity.
- Capturing only the final screen. If the claim concerns a transient warning or intermediate state, capture that state when it occurs and identify its place in the run.
- Showing an image without context. Label the associated task step or claim so the reviewer can tell why the screenshot is included.
- Equating a confirmation-looking screen with completion. Verify the application’s actual state and report what that verification establishes.
- Saving more sensitive material than needed. Narrow the capture scope, access, and retention to the report’s purpose.
