“Heavyweight” and “lightweight” describe broad size and launch-platform categories—not a simple ranking of capability. In the U.S. Navy examples, the submarine-launched Mk 48 serves against submarines and surface ships, while the smaller Mk 54 is an anti-submarine weapon launched from surface ships and aircraft. Their roles, platforms and variant specifications matter more than the labels alone.
At a glance: Mk 48 vs. Mk 54
| Comparison | Mk 48 heavyweight | Mk 54 lightweight |
|---|---|---|
| Mission in cited Navy descriptions | Anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, according to the U.S. Navy Mk 48 fact file. | Anti-submarine warfare, according to the U.S. Navy Mk 54 fact file. |
| Launch platforms | Submarines. | Surface ships and aircraft; the Royal Australian Navy identifies MH-60R helicopters and P-8A aircraft as its launch platforms. |
| Representative mass | Royal Australian Navy lists 1,545.3 kg (3,411 lb) for Mk 48 and 1,662.75 kg (3,671 lb) for Mk 48 ADCAP. | U.S. Navy lists 607 lb; Royal Australian Navy lists 276 kg. |
| Representative dimensions | Royal Australian Navy lists a length of 5.79 m. | U.S. Navy lists 106.9 in long and 12.75 in in diameter. Royal Australian Navy lists 2.72 m long and 324 mm in diameter. |
| Guidance described | Royal Australian Navy describes active or passive homing, with or without wire guidance. | Royal Australian Navy describes active or passive/active acoustic homing. |
The figures are representative, not universal class limits. For example, the Royal Australian Navy distinguishes Mk 48 from Mk 48 ADCAP, and the U.S. and Australian Navy pages give slightly different Mk 54 measurements. Keep each number attached to its source and variant rather than treating values from different services as perfectly interchangeable. Sources: Royal Australian Navy Mk 48, Royal Australian Navy Mk 54, and the U.S. Navy Mk 54 fact file.
Why the two classes serve different roles
Mk 48: a submarine-launched weapon for two target types
The U.S. Navy describes the Mk 48 as a submarine-launched weapon for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. The Royal Australian Navy says the Mk 48 family is designed to combat fast, deep-diving nuclear submarines and high-performance surface ships. That combination of missions and submarine launch platform is the key context for its heavyweight designation.
Mk 54: an anti-submarine weapon for ships and aircraft
The U.S. Navy describes the Mk 54 as a surface-ship- and aircraft-launched anti-submarine weapon. The Royal Australian Navy says its Mk 54 is air-dropped from MH-60R Seahawk helicopters and RAAF P-8A Poseidon aircraft. A U.S. Department of Defense account also identifies surface ships, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft such as the P-8A as launch platforms for the Mk 54. The Navy’s budget highlights describe its intended use in littoral scenarios and shallow-water acoustic and environmental conditions, as well as deep-water engagement capability; those are descriptions of intended capability, not results of a head-to-head test.

How much smaller is the Mk 54?
The published figures show a substantial size difference, but the measurements come from different national sources and should not be presented as a controlled, same-source comparison. The Royal Australian Navy gives the Mk 48 a length of 5.79 m and lists two masses: 1,545.3 kg for Mk 48 and 1,662.75 kg for Mk 48 ADCAP. For the Mk 54, the U.S. Navy lists a mass of 607 lb, a length of 106.9 in and a diameter of 12.75 in; the Royal Australian Navy lists 276 kg, 2.72 m and 324 mm respectively.
These figures establish the broad scale difference, not the weight or dimensions of every version. The U.S. Navy fact file records initial operational capability (IOC) for Mk 54 MOD 0 in 2004 and MOD 1 in 2023. Its description says MOD 0 combines hardware and software from the Mk 46 and Mk 50 programs with commercial off-the-shelf digital signal processing; MOD 1 upgrades the sonar array assembly and associated electronics. The Australian Mk 54 figures and U.S. Navy specifications should therefore remain attributed rather than blended into an unqualified single set of numbers.

Guidance, propulsion and what specifications do not prove
Both Australian Navy descriptions refer to acoustic homing, but that shared high-level label does not establish equal performance. The Royal Australian Navy says Mk 48 and ADCAP can use wire guidance or operate without it, use active or passive homing, and carry out programmed search, acquisition and attack procedures, including multiple re-attacks if a pass misses. Its Mk 54 page describes active or passive/active acoustic homing.
The U.S. Navy lists liquid-propellant propulsion for Mk 54 and a 100-pound high-explosive warhead. The Royal Australian Navy describes its Mk 54 propulsion as an Otto II liquid-fuel reciprocating external-combustion system. These are source-specific descriptions; they do not provide a like-for-like measure of weapon effectiveness.

The Australian Mk 48 page lists an 8 km range and 52 km/h speed, while its Mk 54 page lists a speed of 74.1 km/h. The cited pages do not provide a matched set of equivalent range and speed figures for both torpedoes under the same conditions. Those isolated specifications cannot establish a universal winner in range, speed, depth or effectiveness, nor should a listed maximum be read as a guaranteed tactical engagement outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “heavyweight” and “lightweight” tell you
The labels are useful shorthand for broad scale and platform context, but they are not complete capability ratings. In this comparison, the Mk 48 is the larger submarine-launched weapon described for both submarine and surface targets; the Mk 54 is the smaller anti-submarine weapon carried by surface ships and aircraft. Choosing which is “better” without naming a mission, platform, version and operating conditions obscures the actual distinction.

For background on how torpedoes are maintained, the U.S. Department of Defense describes depot-serviced weapons as having four broad sections: guidance/navigation/control, warhead, fuel tank, and afterbody/propulsion. That maintenance overview is context, not a repair guide.
