On Android, press Power and Volume Down together; on an iPhone, use the Side button with Volume Up or Home, depending on the model; on a Mac, use Shift-Command-3 for the whole screen or Shift-Command-4 for a selected area. A screenshot saves a static image of what is visible.
How to screenshot Google Maps on Android
- Open Google Maps and arrange the map, place, or route so the details you need are visible.
- Press the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time.
- Use the screenshot preview, when available, to review or edit the image.
If that button combination does not work, Google says to hold Power for a few seconds and tap Screenshot. Controls and previews can vary by device; check the manufacturer’s support information for your model if neither method works. On Android 12 and later, many screens that support scrolling also offer Capture more after the first screenshot. Maps may not offer a useful long-scroll capture for every view.
How to screenshot Google Maps on iPhone
- Open Google Maps and frame the view you want.
- Quickly press and release the appropriate buttons together:
- iPhone with Face ID: Side button and Volume Up.
- iPhone with Touch ID and a side button: Side button and Home.
- Tap the preview if you want to crop, mark up, or share the screenshot. Screenshots are saved to Photos by default.
How to screenshot Google Maps on Mac
With Google Maps displayed on your Mac, choose the capture that matches what you need:
- Whole screen: Press Shift-Command-3.
- Selected portion: Press Shift-Command-4, then drag to select the area.
- Capture options: On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app and choose capture options.

What “Screenshot to save” does in Google Maps
Screenshot to save is a Google Maps feature on iPhone and iPad in certain countries. It can identify place names in screenshots and save selected places to a Maps list. It is off by default and uses Gemini. You can allow automatic scanning with full photo access or manually select screenshots with limited or no photo access; manual upload supports up to 50 screenshots per selection. It works with screenshots you already have—it is not required to take one.
