HD-2D is Square Enix’s visual style that combines pixel art with 3D graphics. Applied to a classic RPG such as Chrono Trigger, it could keep the characters’ pixel-art look while giving environments more depth, lighting and atmosphere. That is a thought experiment, not a confirmed Chrono Trigger remake.

What does HD-2D mean?

HD-2D is Square Enix’s name for a presentation that brings retro pixel art together with 3D computer graphics. The result is not simply a 16-bit game enlarged to a higher resolution: pixel-art imagery can sit within dimensional environments, where perspective, lighting and effects help shape the scene. Square Enix describes OCTOPATH TRAVELER II as a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, and its Japanese game page calls its presentation evolved HD-2D.

Square Enix press materials for OCTOPATH TRAVELER II describe the pixel-art and 3DCG blend; the Japanese game page uses the phrase “evolved HD-2D.”

How can HD-2D change a game’s look?

The style can make a familiar pixel-art world feel more spatial and staged. Three-dimensional scenery, light and atmospheric effects can suggest distance or focus attention, while pixel-art characters and details retain a deliberately retro appearance. The balance depends on the choices made for each game; HD-2D is not one fixed set of visual settings.

Depth and atmosphere

In a Square Enix development feature about DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake, the team discusses adapting effects such as depth of field and fog. The feature explains that these effects had been used in earlier HD-2D games to create atmosphere and a view from above, but could lower color saturation in ways that did not suit Dragon Quest’s identity. The team also found that overly realistic water detracted from the game’s spirit.

Color and tone

Those adjustments show why the style can be tailored rather than applied as a preset. A warmer, brighter palette or restrained effects might better serve one game, while another might benefit from more pronounced depth and atmosphere. Square Enix’s feature reports that producer Masaaki Hayasaka described the challenge of making the remake’s world look beautiful while matching how original players had imagined it.

What might HD-2D look like in Chrono Trigger?

As a visual thought experiment, Chrono Trigger’s recognizable pixel-art characters could remain prominent against more dimensional scenery. Lighting and carefully chosen depth or atmospheric effects might give locations a more staged, diorama-like quality without replacing the pixel-art look. These are possibilities inferred from Square Enix’s descriptions of other HD-2D games—not announced plans for Chrono Trigger.

  • Sprite readability: Would scenery add depth while keeping the characters and pixel-art details easy to see?
  • Effects: Would lighting, fog or depth of field strengthen a scene’s atmosphere, or obscure its pixel-art detail?
  • Palette: Would the colors suit the game’s distinctive mood, rather than simply making the image more realistic?
  • Familiarity: Would the new presentation feel fresh while still matching players’ memories of the original?
