End-to-end encryption (E2EE) can prevent a notes service from decrypting covered note content while it is stored or synced—but only when the feature is enabled, the particular note or data category is covered, and the encryption keys remain outside the provider’s control. It does not protect every note by default, hide every piece of metadata, secure a device that someone can already access, or guarantee that you can recover data after losing your keys.

What end-to-end encryption means in a notes app

With E2EE, a note is encrypted so that only trusted devices or user-controlled recovery methods have the keys needed to decrypt it. The service can store or sync encrypted data without being able to read the protected content. That differs from encryption in transit and at rest: those protections can secure data as it moves or sits on servers, while the provider still holds keys that let it decrypt the data.

Apple’s iCloud documentation distinguishes its standard protection from E2EE. Under standard iCloud data protection, data is encrypted, but Apple holds keys for many categories and can help restore data. With Advanced Data Protection (ADP), Notes is among the iCloud categories protected end to end, and Apple says it does not have the keys needed to recover that protected data. Apple’s iCloud data security overview describes the distinction.

Apple Notes has two different encryption features

Apple offers both note-level locking and account-level iCloud protection. They cover different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Locking a specific note

You can lock selected notes using your device passcode or a separate note password. Apple describes secure notes as end-to-end encrypted. Its security documentation says a 16-byte key is derived from the passphrase using PBKDF2 and SHA-256, and that note content and supported attachments are encrypted with AES-GCM. Apple lists images, sketches, tables, maps, and websites among the supported attachment types; unsupported types cannot be added to a secure note. The documentation specifically says creation and modification dates are not encrypted. See Secure features in the Notes app.

Enabling Advanced Data Protection for iCloud

ADP changes the protection for supported iCloud data categories at the account level, including Notes. It is separate from locking individual notes. Apple says standard data protection remains the default, so do not assume that every note in an iCloud account is end-to-end encrypted just because the Notes app can lock a note. Check Apple’s ADP privacy information and the current iCloud security overview for the account’s configuration and supported categories.

What E2EE protects—and what it leaves exposed

What it can protect

When a note or account category is actually covered by E2EE, and the keys remain under user or trusted-device control, the service provider cannot decrypt that protected content using its own server-held keys. This is the central protection boundary: it limits who can decrypt covered data, not every possible route by which information could be exposed.

What it does not automatically protect

  • Uncovered notes or categories. A selected-note lock, an account setting, and ordinary encrypted syncing can have different coverage. Verify which one applies to the data you care about.
  • All metadata. Apple specifically says secure-note creation and modification dates are not encrypted. Its iCloud overview also notes that some metadata and usage information remain under standard protection.
  • A device that can display the note. If a phone or computer is unlocked, compromised, shared, or otherwise accessible to someone else, that person may be able to view decrypted notes. Encryption cannot prevent exposure after content is displayed or deliberately copied, exported, photographed, or shared.
  • Account recovery or access failure. E2EE cannot recover keys that neither the provider nor the user can access. Apple says ADP users must rely on their available recovery methods.
  • Weak implementation or poor key handling. An app’s mention of a strong algorithm alone does not establish how its whole system handles key derivation, local storage, backups, sharing, account recovery, or metadata.

Recovery is part of the security trade-off

If the provider does not hold the decryption keys, it may be unable to restore protected notes when you lose access. With ADP, Apple says users need to retain access to trusted devices and set up a recovery contact or recovery key as applicable. If all usable recovery paths are lost, protected data may be permanently inaccessible. Review Apple’s current ADP recovery information before changing account settings, and keep recovery details somewhere you can access if your primary device is unavailable.

How to evaluate a notes app’s encryption claims

Compare documented coverage and key control, not just an algorithm name or a “secure” label. A useful evaluation asks:

  • What is covered by default? Are all notes encrypted end to end, only notes you explicitly lock, or only data covered after turning on a separate account setting?
  • Which content and metadata are included? Look for specifics on note text, attachments, tags, timestamps, previews, search indexes, and usage data.
  • Who controls the keys? Can the provider decrypt data to help with restoration, or do decryption keys remain with trusted devices or user-controlled recovery?
  • What happens when access is lost? Find out what recovery methods exist and what happens after losing a password, device, or recovery key.
  • How are local copies protected? Notes may be decrypted on your device for viewing. Check what the app documents about local storage and device security.
  • What features work under encryption? Check supported platforms, sharing behavior, and attachment limits; Apple, for example, documents attachment types that cannot be used in its secure notes.
  • How strong is the evidence? Prefer a current technical specification and platform security documentation, supplemented by appropriately scoped independent reviews. A published specification is useful, but it is not by itself proof of every security property.

What the documented examples establish

Standard Notes publishes a client-side encryption specification and explains its approach to securing notes and device storage. Those materials are useful starting points for examining its claims about encrypted data and local storage. Apple’s documentation, in turn, makes clear that note-level secure notes and ADP are distinct parts of its security model. These descriptions do not establish a like-for-like independent audit across the services, so they are not enough to declare a universal best notes app.

Check regional availability before relying on ADP

Apple service availability can vary by region and change over time. The Associated Press reported on February 21, 2025, that Apple would stop offering ADP to new users in the United Kingdom and eventually disable it for existing users. That report is dated and does not establish the feature’s current availability in every region. Check Apple’s current support information for your location before relying on ADP: Associated Press report on UK availability.
