HTTP 402 Payment Required is reserved for future use in the HTTP standard. RFC 9110 does not define a universal way to present a payment challenge, send payment details, or retry a request. Those steps depend on the payment protocol or service that uses 402.
That distinction matters: a 402 response may be part of a payment flow, but the status code by itself does not tell you how to pay—or promise that payment will grant access.
What does HTTP 402 Payment Required mean?
RFC 9110 §15.5.3 gives 402 a deliberately brief definition: “The 402 (Payment Required) status code is reserved for future use.” The specification does not define payment headers, credentials, verification, settlement, or a retry sequence. Read RFC 9110 §15.5.3.
In practice, an API or service can use 402 to signal that payment is needed, but its own protocol determines what the response means and what the client must do. A client should inspect the response headers and body rather than infer a payment method from the status alone.

Why am I getting a 402 error?
The service may be requiring payment before returning a resource, or it may be rejecting payment information that was missing, invalid, or expired. What applies depends on the service’s implementation. A 402 response does not necessarily mean that a charge has already been made, nor that paying will automatically unlock the requested resource.
For example, the current IETF Internet-Draft for the Payment HTTP Authentication Scheme proposes returning 402 when a payment credential is absent or payment validation fails. It distinguishes that from a 401 for authentication failure unrelated to payment and a 403 when payment was verified but access is still denied by policy. This is proposed behavior, not a rule in RFC 9110. The draft may change. See the IETF Datatracker draft.

Is HTTP 402 a standard payment flow?
No. HTTP standardizes the status code’s reservation, not a universal payment transaction. Proposals and projects layer their own challenge formats and payment steps on HTTP; implementations using the same 402 status can therefore require different client behavior.
Payment HTTP Authentication Scheme draft
The IETF Internet-Draft proposes an HTTP authentication scheme called Payment. In its example flow, the server responds with 402 and a WWW-Authenticate: Payment challenge. Challenge parameters can identify the payment request, method, or intent. The client fulfills that challenge and retries the resource request with a payment credential, normally in Authorization: Payment <credential>. The server verifies and settles the payment, then can return the resource and an optional Payment-Receipt.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The draft also recommends Problem Details bodies for errors and a fresh challenge after payment validation fails. These details belong to the draft; they are not general HTTP 402 semantics.
x402
x402 is a separate project protocol with its own message format. Its overview describes a 402 response containing a PaymentRequired object, a client selecting a requirement and retrying with a PaymentPayload, and server-side or facilitator verification followed by fulfillment and settlement. Its HTTP transport names PAYMENT-REQUIRED for server-to-client payment requirements, PAYMENT-SIGNATURE for client-to-server payment data, and PAYMENT-RESPONSE for server-to-client responses. Project implementations can vary, so that outline is not a guarantee that every x402 server follows an identical end-to-end sequence. See the x402 project documentation.

How to compare payment-aware APIs
Do not treat support for status 402 as proof that two APIs share a payment flow. Compare the actual protocol details:
- Challenge representation: the Payment draft’s
WWW-Authenticate: Paymentparameters or x402’sPAYMENT-REQUIREDformat. - Credential carriage: the draft’s default
Authorizationheader, or a challenge-selected header, versus x402’sPAYMENT-SIGNATURE. - Payment choice: supported methods and intents in the draft versus x402’s scheme and network requirements.
- Verification and settlement: whether the server handles these itself or uses a facilitator, and what settlement model applies.
- Retry and failure handling: whether the implementation provides fresh challenges, error details, retry timing, and clear status mapping.
- Security and operation safety: how it handles TLS, credential exposure, replay, caching, concurrent requests, and idempotency.
Should I retry a 402 response?
Do not blindly repeat the same request. RFC 9110 defines no universal retry rule for 402. In the Payment authentication draft, servers SHOULD use Retry-After to indicate when a client may retry; its example uses a 60-second delay. That timing recommendation is draft-specific, and retrying still requires fulfilling the payment challenge. An expired or invalid credential may result in another 402 with a fresh challenge or problem detail.

If you are using an API
- Inspect the response body and headers to identify the payment protocol and the offered challenge.
- Continue only if you expected the payment request and trust the service. Check the amount, recipient, asset, and validity period before authorizing payment.
- Follow the protocol’s specified payment method and credential header; do not assume that a 402 alone identifies either.
- Honor any stated retry timing. If payment validation fails or the challenge expires, handle the new response rather than resending the same credential automatically.
If you are implementing a client or server
The Payment authentication draft treats payment credentials as sensitive bearer authorization, calls for single-use proof semantics, and recommends idempotency handling for non-idempotent methods to reduce duplicate effects. These are proposal-specific directions. A client should avoid exposing credentials, and an implementation should define how it handles replay, concurrent requests, and operations that could produce duplicate effects. Use the actual scheme’s security and error-handling requirements rather than treating HTTP 402 as a complete payment specification.
