Lowercase end is a special case in Mermaid flowcharts: the official flowchart guide warns that typing it in lowercase can break the diagram. Rename the node End or END for the quickest fix. If the visible label must stay lowercase, give the node a different ID and set its displayed text to end.

Why lowercase “end” breaks a Mermaid flowchart

Mermaid’s flowchart syntax treats the all-lowercase word end as a problematic token. The official flowchart guide specifically warns that using it in a flowchart breaks parsing. A Mermaid issue opened on June 5, 2020, also documents a reproduction with state --> end; that report confirms the problem has been encountered, but does not establish that every renderer or version behaves identically. Issue #1444.

Choose a repair based on the label you need

Repair Example Trade-off
Capitalize the node End or END Fastest documented repair, but the visible capitalization changes.
Change the ID and preserve the label endNode["end"] Keeps the displayed word lowercase, but references to the node must use the new ID.

Mermaid’s flowchart documentation recommends capitalization or a workaround. Its syntax reference explains that a node’s identifier and displayed text can differ, and advises quoting end.

Option 1: Capitalize the node

If the exact case of the displayed text does not matter, change the identifier to End or END and update every edge or later reference that points to the old identifier. This is the shortest path to a repair.

    start --> endNode["end"]

Here, endNode is the identifier used in Mermaid syntax; end is the label shown in the diagram. If other edges connect to this node, change those references to endNode too.

Check the diagram systematically if it still fails

  1. Confirm the diagram type. Verify that the failing block is a Mermaid flowchart. Mermaid’s syntax reference also flags end for sequence diagrams, but diagram types have distinct syntax rules; do not assume the flowchart workaround explains every diagram error.
  2. Find the lowercase token. Check the node ID and surrounding flowchart syntax for end in the failing portion.
  3. Apply one repair consistently. Capitalize the node, or replace the ID with a safe alternative such as endNode and quote the lowercase label. Update all edges and later references to match the chosen ID.
  4. Inspect adjacent syntax if the error remains. The reserved-word issue is a plausible cause when a flowchart uses lowercase end, but not every parser failure is caused by that word. Review the surrounding diagram syntax and its declared diagram type.
