Save it as a separate artifact, record any screenshot-capture error without replacing the original Selenium exception, and then re-raise the original error so its traceback remains available.
Capture the browser state before closing the driver
For a Selenium error, a driver-level screenshot is usually the most useful starting point: it can show the page around the failure, including overlays or dialogs. In Python, call driver.save_screenshot(path) while the session is still active. Put driver.quit() in a finally block so cleanup happens after the screenshot attempt whether the test passes or fails.

Keep the screenshot-capture attempt in its own nested try: if saving the image fails, that secondary error should not hide the failure that caused the handler to run. Python’s Selenium WebDriverException reference describes the exception’s message, stack trace, and optional screen field. The field is not guaranteed to contain image data; check it before attempting any processing, and confirm its representation for the Selenium version you use.
Choose driver-level or element-level capture
Use the driver screenshot when you need context: the page, visible frame, modal, or overlay around the error. Use an element screenshot when the element itself is the subject of the failure and the binding supports element capture. Selenium’s WebDriver screenshot documentation shows driver and element examples, with method names and returned image forms varying by language.

In JavaScript, the WebDriver API’s takeScreenshot() returns a promise containing a base64-encoded PNG. The API describes capture as best effort, preferring the entire page, then the current window, the visible portion of the current frame, and finally the display containing the browser. Capture screenshots in Java and JavaScript
Java
Selenium’s official example uses TakesScreenshot and requests a file result. Save or copy that file before quitting the driver:

Make the screenshot useful for diagnosis
An image records visible state at the moment of capture; it does not, by itself, establish why a test failed. Store it alongside the exception message and stack trace, and include the URL, browser or session details, and test step in your test runner’s logs when available. Selenium keeps message and stack-trace context separate from an optional exception screenshot.

When the error is NoSuchElementException
Check that the locator is correct and that the page or target content had time to load. Selenium’s Python NoSuchElementException reference notes that an element may not yet be on screen because a page is still loading, and points to WebDriverWait as an option when waiting for the element is appropriate. A screenshot can show what was visible at failure time, but it does not fix a wrong locator or a timing problem.
Common capture failures
- The browser has already closed: move the screenshot attempt into the exception handler before
quit()or other session teardown. - Saving the file fails: create the parent directory and check that the test process can write to the chosen path.
- The original test failure disappears: catch and log screenshot errors separately, then re-raise the original exception.
- No image is attached to the exception: exception-carried screenshot data is optional; use the active driver’s screenshot method instead.
- The screenshot does not show the cause: pair it with the error text, stack trace, URL, session details, and test step; the capture only reflects visible state at that time.
