Permadeath means a unit permanently leaves your roster after a qualifying defeat, but the exact rule depends on the game and mode. To reduce the risk, check the rules before starting, use the tactical information the game provides, limit exposure, and retreat when the cost of pressing on is too high. No tactic guarantees a deathless campaign.

What permadeath means—and what it does not

In tactics games, permadeath is the permanent loss of a character or unit after a qualifying defeat: they cannot return to the active roster for the rest of that campaign. It is a useful shorthand, not a universal ruleset. Some games distinguish a death from a wound or an unconscious state, and campaign settings can change what happens after defeat.

For example, Nintendo describes Fire Emblem: Three Houses Classic mode as a setting where a unit defeated on the battlefield is “gone for good.” In XCOM 2, soldiers killed in combat are permanently removed and cannot be resurrected, while critically wounded soldiers heal over time and can return. Those examples show why you should check a game’s specific rules rather than assume every fallen unit is gone.

Keep the three consequences separate

  • Unit loss: Is a defeated unit permanently unavailable, temporarily injured, or returned after the mission?
  • Undo options: Can you reload a save or rewind a turn after a bad outcome?
  • Ironman restrictions: Does the mode lock decisions into a single save that is overwritten as you play?

In an interview, the PlayStation Blog described XCOM Ironman as using one save file overwritten by player actions, preventing a return to an earlier save to undo a mistake. That is an XCOM example, not a rule that applies to every game with permadeath.

Check the rules before you commit to a campaign

Before starting, read the selected mode’s description and establish what counts as death, whether the game offers turn rewind or save reload, and what ends a mission. If the mode is Ironman, plan on living with the consequences of decisions rather than relying on an earlier save. Also check whether the game offers replacements and how hard individual roster members are to replace; that varies by title.

There is no universally correct difficulty or mode. XCOM 2 senior producer Garth DeAngelis advised players not to begin with Legend Ironman on a first playthrough, recommending that they learn the campaign first. That advice is specific to XCOM 2, but the broader lesson is to understand a game’s systems before choosing its most restrictive settings.

Use the information the game gives you

At the start of a mission, review objectives, unit health, abilities, ammunition, and any visible enemy information. Before committing to an attack, account for the displayed hit chance and projected damage rather than treating a possible hit as certain. XCOM 2’s manual documents these targeting previews.

Then make positioning part of the decision. In XCOM 2, cover reduces the chance of being hit, high cover offers the strongest defense among cover positions, and a flanked soldier is especially vulnerable. The manual also warns that some tiles expose units to enemy sight, noise, or hazards. Other games may use different indicators and rules, so apply the same habit—inspect the consequences of a move—using the information that particular game actually provides.

Manage exposure and choose when to engage

In XCOM 2, concealment can let a squad position itself before initiating contact. It usually starts active on missions, but firing, entering enemy line of sight, or making too much noise can break it; some missions begin without concealment. Use it to choose a favorable opening when available, not as a guarantee that the squad will remain hidden.

More generally, avoid exposing units to threats without a clear reason. Check whether a move leaves a soldier flanked, crosses a hazardous tile, or advances beyond the support of the rest of the squad. A powerful attack may not be worth taking if it leaves a key unit exposed to several enemies.

Use recovery tools, and retreat when the mission turns bad

Keep track of healing and stabilization options. XCOM 2’s manual describes medkits as tools for restoring health or stabilizing critical wounds; a critical wound is not the same as permanent death in that game. Know which units carry recovery tools and whether they can reach a teammate safely.

When extraction is available, compare the likely cost of continuing with the value of the objective. In XCOM 2, calling evac can save troops, but may forfeit loot, experience, or mission-success parameters. Retreat is therefore a trade-off, not a free reset. A mission-specific objective or rule can also affect what extraction preserves, so check the conditions before deciding.

Choose a mode that fits your tolerance for risk

When comparing modes or games, evaluate the rules on their own rather than treating “permadeath” as a complete description:

Question Why it matters
Does a fallen unit return, recover, or leave the roster permanently? This defines the direct cost of defeat; the answer can vary by mode, as the Three Houses Classic description and XCOM 2 manual illustrate.
Can you reload or rewind? This determines whether a mistake can be undone through the game’s permitted options.
Does a mode lock decisions into a save? XCOM Ironman, as described by the PlayStation Blog interview, overwrites a single save as actions are taken.
How replaceable are roster members? Replacement systems differ by title; check the particular game’s rules rather than assuming all units carry the same campaign value.
Can you retreat while preserving the rest of the squad? Extraction may save units but sacrifice mission rewards or success conditions, as in XCOM 2.

Random outcomes, hidden information, mission-specific rules, and mistakes can still cost units. Permadeath makes decisions consequential; it does not make every loss preventable.
