Client-side rendering builds the interface in the browser; server-side rendering sends HTML generated for a request; static rendering prepares HTML ahead of time. Any of the three can lead to an interactive React tool, but what users see before JavaScript runs—and when they can actually use controls—differs.
How the three rendering approaches differ
| Approach | Where and when HTML is produced | Before client JavaScript runs | What it means for an interactive tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client-side rendering (CSR) | The browser runs JavaScript to build or update the page’s DOM. | The page may initially show little beyond a shell or loading state; the useful interface depends on JavaScript execution and DOM work. | Natural for app-like interfaces with substantial state, but startup code and rendering work can delay both content and interaction. web.dev: Client-side rendering of HTML and interactivity |
| Server-side rendering (SSR) | The server generates HTML for a request. | HTML can appear before the React client code attaches event handlers. | Useful when initial output needs request-specific data. To make the React output interactive, the browser hydrates it with hydrateRoot; server rendering does not remove the need for client JavaScript when the page must behave as a React app. React server APIs; React client APIs |
| Static rendering / generation | HTML is generated ahead of a request, generally at build time, and served or cached as a file. | Useful page content can arrive without per-request HTML rendering. | Works well when output is predictable. Static HTML is not automatically interactive; hydrate it in the browser if it needs React behavior. Unbounded personalized output needs a hybrid or dynamic approach. React: prerender |
What users see is not the same as when a tool is usable
CSR can postpone the first useful interface until JavaScript has downloaded and executed. SSR and static HTML can show content sooner, but visible controls may not respond until hydration attaches their behavior. A page that has painted is not necessarily ready for a user action.
Evaluate both the initial experience and the time until important actions work. For a calculator, for example, measure when a user can enter values and get a result—not only when the form first appears. Large startup bundles, unnecessary DOM work, and hydration all affect that usable moment.
React APIs: choose the output method that fits
Hydrate generated HTML when it needs React behavior
hydrateRoot is for a DOM node whose HTML was previously generated by react-dom/server. It connects the client React code to that existing output; it is not a synonym for server rendering itself. React: Client React DOM APIs

Do not use static markup for a hydratable app
renderToStaticMarkup produces non-interactive HTML that cannot be hydrated. React describes it as useful for simple static page generation or content such as email. For an interactive app, its documentation recommends server rendering with renderToString and client-side hydrateRoot. React: renderToStaticMarkup
Distinguish immediate strings, streaming, and ahead-of-time prerendering
renderToString returns a string immediately; it does not stream output or wait for data. React recommends streaming APIs where appropriate: renderToPipeableStream for Node.js and renderToReadableStream for Web Streams environments. For ahead-of-time static generation that waits for data, React’s prerender waits for data to load before finishing HTML generation; it does not stream additional content while that data loads. The resulting HTML can then be hydrated in the browser. React: renderToString; React: Server React DOM APIs; React: prerender

Choose by route, freshness, and operating cost
Use CSR when the route is primarily an application interface
CSR can suit tools whose core value is a stateful workspace with frequent client-side updates. Its trade-off is that a useful initial interface and responsive controls depend more directly on browser JavaScript and DOM work. Split or defer code not needed for the first useful action, and keep the rendered DOM manageable. web.dev: Rendering on the Web
Use SSR when initial output needs request-specific data
SSR can generate HTML using data available for the current request. It also adds rendering work at request time and may require HTML caching or other optimizations. The browser still needs the client code and hydration for interactive React behavior.

Use static generation when output is stable or can be regenerated
Static files can be served or cached without generating HTML dynamically for each request, making them a fit for predictable routes. The trade-off is producing the needed URLs and managing when generated output becomes stale or must be invalidated. Static generation is a poor fit for an unlimited range of personalized results unless paired with dynamic handling.
Mix strategies across a tool
A tool can statically render stable explanatory pages and use SSR or client-side behavior for a workspace whose output depends on a user or current data. This route-level hybrid is a design option, not a default prescription: choose based on what each route needs, how fresh its data must be, and how it will be served. web.dev: Rendering on the Web

Compare performance with user-centered measurements
No rendering model guarantees a fast experience on its own. Results depend on JavaScript size, server capacity and latency, caching, data requirements, device, and network. Static rendering can offer fast first contentful paint and consistently fast time to first byte because HTML need not be generated dynamically per request, but client JavaScript can still limit performance. Prerendering only an SPA shell may improve the initial paint while leaving substantial JavaScript work before the tool becomes interactive. web.dev: Rendering on the Web
Use Core Web Vitals as experience targets, not proof that one architecture is faster. web.dev’s “good” thresholds are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS of 0.1 or less. Assess them at the 75th percentile, segmented across mobile and desktop. These are thresholds, not comparative results from a controlled test of React rendering strategies. web.dev: Web Vitals
