To capture one element rather than a whole page, select it with a CSS selector and use the browser automation library’s element-screenshot method. In Playwright, call locator.screenshot(); in Puppeteer, call ElementHandle.screenshot(). Both capture the element’s rendered region, but their targeting and documented scroll behavior differ.
Capture an element with Playwright
Use page.locator(selector) to identify the element, then call the locator’s screenshot() method. The resulting image is clipped to the matched element’s position and size, rather than showing the whole viewport.

That makes it a practical choice when a framework re-renders content. Choose a selector that identifies the intended element; if the page has repeated components, check how many elements match before capturing.
Complete Playwright example
Install Playwright in a Node.js project with npm install playwright. Save this as capture-element.js and run it with node capture-element.js. Replace the example URL and selector with the page and element you need.

});The example waits for the page’s load event and verifies that the selector matches exactly one element. Neither step guarantees that a site’s asynchronously rendered content is ready: use a site-specific readiness condition when needed, such as waiting for a meaningful target or content state before taking the screenshot.
Capture an element with Puppeteer
In Puppeteer, obtain an element handle from the page and call screenshot() on it. The documented element screenshot method scrolls the target into view if necessary, then captures it using the page screenshot mechanism.

});Choose a selector and capture the state you need
- Target one intended element. Use a selector that is specific enough for the page. If the selector can match repeated cards, rows, or buttons, count the matches and decide which one you want before capturing.
- Wait for the relevant content. A page load event is not a universal guarantee that client-rendered or delayed content has appeared. Wait for a meaningful selector or other condition tied to the state you intend to capture.
- Account for DOM updates. Playwright locators can re-resolve the element when the DOM changes. Puppeteer’s
ElementHandlerefers to a particular element; if the page replaces that node, obtain a fresh handle. - Check visibility and overlays. A matching element can be covered by another element. In Playwright, an overlay can obscure the target in the screenshot, so inspect the rendered page if the captured result looks blank or incomplete.
Why the element screenshot may look wrong
No element matched
The selector may be incorrect, the element may not have rendered yet, or the page may be on a different state than expected. Confirm the selector against the live page and wait for the target’s actual appearance before selecting it.

The screenshot shows the wrong repeated item
A selector can match more than one element. Check the match count and make the selector more specific, or deliberately choose the intended match using the library’s locator or element-selection APIs.
The capture is blank or partly obscured
Check whether another element—such as a modal, sticky banner, or loading layer—is covering the target. The screenshot captures rendered pixels; selecting the underlying DOM node does not make an overlapping element disappear.
The target is outside the viewport
Puppeteer’s element screenshot method documents scrolling the element into view when needed. Do not assume identical scroll behavior across libraries or versions; consult the documentation for the version installed in your project if the viewport position matters.

The element is missing after a re-render
With Playwright, a locator can find the current matching element again when the DOM changes. With Puppeteer, reacquire an element handle after a page update that may have replaced the original node.
