To benchmark speculative decoding credibly, compare it with ordinary autoregressive decoding on the same target model, prompts, hardware and serving conditions. Measure acceptance behavior, per-user output rate and aggregate throughput—not acceptance alone—and report results by workload and concurrency. Speculative decoding is data- and system-dependent, so one favorable workload or a theoretical speedup bound cannot establish what another deployment will achieve.

Why speculative-decoding benchmarks are easy to misread

Speculative decoding uses a draft method to propose tokens that a target model verifies. How many proposed tokens are accepted—and how much time drafting and verification take—can vary with prompt content, output position, input length, concurrency, model, engine and hardware. The SPEED-Bench authors describe the method as inherently data-dependent and call for diverse, representative workloads in their 2026 paper.

That makes a single headline number a poor substitute for a benchmark. A result from one model, engine or prompt set does not establish the expected gain elsewhere. The MLSys 2026 paper “Speculative Decoding: Performance or Illusion?” likewise reports that target-model verification can dominate execution and that acceptance length varies across token positions, requests and datasets.

Build a workload that resembles the deployment

Start from the application the benchmark is meant to inform. Include its domains and preserve meaningful differences within them: coding and math prompts may produce different acceptance behavior from open-ended writing or roleplay. Record where prompts came from, how many were used, how they were selected and filtered, and whether any were excluded.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Cover semantic diversity

SPEED-Bench provides one concrete design example. Its qualitative split contains 880 prompts: 80 in each of 11 categories—Coding, Math, Humanities, STEM, Writing, Summarization, Roleplay, RAG, Multilingual, Reasoning and QA—according to the NVIDIA Research overview, published in 2026. This is a reference design, not a requirement that every benchmark use those exact categories; choose categories that represent the system being evaluated.

Do not replace real prompts with random token strings. The NVIDIA overview warns that random-token inputs can distort acceptance behavior, mixture-of-experts routing and throughput. Keep prompts semantically meaningful even when controlling their lengths.

Match prompt lengths and serving conditions

Use the actual input-length range and output conditions relevant to the deployment. For throughput questions, measure more than batch size one or short prompts: vary concurrency or batch size and input sequence length. State the exact prompt-length buckets, output limits and any truncation or padding. If you pad or truncate, document how it is done and preserve semantic content where possible.

Control the comparison with autoregressive decoding

For each speculative configuration, run a no-speculation autoregressive baseline on the same target model. Hold other factors constant as far as possible. A difference in prompt formatting, tokenization or serving settings can otherwise look like a decoding-method effect.

Record the full configuration

Publish enough detail for readers to identify what was tested and, ideally, reproduce it:

  • Target model and version; draft method and draft model, if applicable.
  • Inference engine and software version; hardware; precision or quantization; and context length.
  • Draft length and other speculative-decoding settings; sampling parameters; concurrency or batch size.
  • Prompt source and count, selection and filtering rules, input and output lengths, and exclusions.
  • Warm-up, number of repetitions and timing procedure, including whether timing covers end-to-end serving and how streamed output is timed.

Use equivalent token IDs and prompt formatting across engines where the comparison permits it. Chat templates, beginning-of-sequence handling and tokenization can change the sequence presented to the draft model. SPEED-Bench addresses this in its framework by tokenizing and formatting externally, then passing equivalent pre-tokenized input, as described in the NVIDIA Research overview.

Compare like with like

When comparing methods or engines, match the target model and hardware, engine and software version, prompt set and token IDs, output conditions, concurrency, and input and output lengths. Compare acceptance behavior by domain as well as system performance. If some conditions cannot be matched, identify the differences and avoid ranking results from incompatible setups.

Measure acceptance and user-visible performance separately

Acceptance metrics help explain draft behavior; they do not, by themselves, show whether users receive output faster or whether the system serves more output overall. A useful report pairs acceptance behavior with end-to-end system measurements for each workload and concurrency setting.

  • Acceptance rate or acceptance length: Report the metric used, its denominator or definition, and how it is aggregated across requests and positions. These metrics diagnose how draft proposals fare under the target model; they are not a substitute for measuring serving performance.
  • Per-user output token rate: Report output tokens per second at each tested serving condition. This is a latency-oriented view of the rate experienced by an individual user; state how it is calculated and whether the result is an average or another statistic.
  • Aggregate output throughput: Report total output tokens per second served by the system under each concurrency condition. This captures system capacity, which can change independently of per-user rate.
  • Time to first token and inter-token latency: Include these when the question is perceived latency. Keep them distinct from aggregate throughput and specify the timing method.

Where a speedup ratio is useful, calculate it from measured values for the speculative configuration and its matched no-speculation baseline. Publish both underlying values alongside the ratio; a ratio without its baseline conceals the scale and context of the result.

Report results by workload and configuration

Show per-domain results or distributions when averages hide meaningful variation. Separate workloads, input lengths and concurrency settings rather than presenting one blended figure as a universal answer. Keep analytical upper bounds clearly labeled as bounds, not as measured speedups.

The NVIDIA Research overview offers a useful illustration of why configuration matters. Its example at batch size 32 and draft length 3 reports these setup-specific results:

Target model, method and engine Mean acceptance length Mean speedup
Llama 3.3 70B; N-Gram; TensorRT-LLM 1.41 0.88×
GPT OSS 120B; EAGLE3; TensorRT-LLM 2.25 1.34×
Qwen3-Next; MTP; SGLang 2.81 1.20×

These are the overview’s published examples, not expected gains for other configurations. At the same stated batch size and draft length, the three combinations show different mean speedups; one general speedup claim would erase that variation.

Other published numbers need the same care. The abstract of Liu and colleagues’ 2024 “Online Speculative Decoding” reports acceptance-rate increases of 0.1 to 0.65 and latency reductions of 1.42× to 2.17× for that study’s prototype evaluation. Those figures describe that evaluation, not a cross-system expectation.

Use benchmark platforms as tools, not as proof of equivalence

Spec-Bench documents comparisons against vanilla autoregressive decoding and output comparison. A platform can help organize an evaluation, but the benchmark report still needs to identify its actual models, data, settings and timing procedure. Repository instructions, supported methods and dependencies may change, so check the current project documentation before attempting reproduction.
