There is no squad composition that wins across every tactics game. Build around the mission: identify the job your squad must do, the threats and movement constraints it will face, and the roles the game’s rules make useful. Then check what the lineup cannot do—and whether another squad or substitute can cover that gap.
Start with the mission, not a favorite class
Before selecting units, read the objective and the rules governing deployment, movement, and loss. A squad meant to seize an objective may need to reach it quickly; one assigned to hold ground may need to withstand the threats expected there. Whether units persist between missions or can be permanently lost also changes how much risk a lineup can reasonably take.
Make the squad’s primary job specific enough to guide choices. “Scout and initiate safely” or “hold against ranged attacks” is more useful than “deal damage.” A Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga strategy guide recommends giving each squad a main role while retaining flexibility for related tasks. That is advice for that game, not a universal composition rule. Read the Symphony of War squad-building guide.
Match unit roles to the game and its threats
Roles such as damage, defense, healing, scouting, mobility, and objective interaction are useful questions to ask, not a fixed checklist. The game may make some roles optional, combine several in one unit, or reward a different answer entirely. Identify the threats and tasks that matter in the specific encounter, then select units that can address them.

XCOM 2 shows how distinct class functions can contribute to a roster: Rangers specialize in stealth or close-range combat; Specialists use a Gremlin for healing, bonuses, or hacking; Grenadiers focus on explosives or heavy weapons; and Sharpshooters specialize in long-range attacks or pistols. These descriptions come from the Feral Interactive XCOM 2 manual, which identifies Firaxis Games as the original developer and 2K as the original publisher. They illustrate role coverage in XCOM 2, not a class template to import into another game.
Likewise, a Symphony of War guide discusses separate firearm and mage threats, assassins that can threaten the back line, and choices involving cavalry, ambushes, ranged attacks, and area attacks. Those counters and formation considerations belong to Symphony of War’s mechanics. Its Core Squads guide describes focused ranged, cannon, anti-firearm, anti-mage, mixed-defense, ambush, cavalry, healing-support, and flying-dragon approaches; none is a general standard for tactics games.

Choose positions and actions as part of the build
A lineup is only as useful as the rules let it be in the encounter. Check movement, attack, cover, concealment, and formation rules before deciding that a unit’s role is covered. In XCOM 2, the manual says each soldier has two action points per turn, cover reduces the chance of being hit, and a flanked soldier is especially vulnerable. It also advises: “Use concealment to set up ambushes and engage the enemy on your terms.” These are XCOM 2-specific rules and advice; other games may reward entirely different positioning.
In Symphony of War, the squad-building guide considers front, middle, and back positions, including keeping fragile healers and mages safer against some threats while recognizing that area attacks can still expose them. Treat that as a game-specific positioning example, not a universal formation prescription.

Balance specialization against flexibility
A focused squad may perform its assigned job well but have few answers when the mission changes or a counter appears. A more flexible lineup can respond to a wider range of situations, though it may be less optimized for a narrow task. Neither approach is automatically better: the right trade depends on the mission and on what the rest of your roster can do.
Before committing, ask what capability you are giving up by choosing each unit, piece of gear, or formation. If another squad or a reserve unit can cover the gap, specialization may be practical. If this group must handle several possible threats alone, broader coverage may matter more. The Symphony of War guides recommend retaining varied squads for surprises while building squads around main roles; that is game-specific community strategy advice, not a measured cross-game win-rate claim.

Compare candidate squads on the same questions
When several lineups look viable, compare them against the mission rather than searching for a universal winner. These are practical evaluation questions, not a published scoring system:
| Factor | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Mission fit | Does the lineup help complete the objective within the deployment and movement constraints? |
| Threat coverage | Can it handle the enemies or hazards the game makes relevant to this encounter? |
| Role overlap and gaps | Are essential jobs covered, or does a repeated role leave another need unanswered? |
| Resilience | Can the squad recover from damage, a lost unit, or a bad engagement under this game’s rules? |
| Mobility and positioning | Can its units reach useful terrain and maintain a safe, effective formation? |
| Flexibility | Can the group handle an unexpected encounter, or can another squad cover that contingency? |
| Opportunity cost | What useful capability do you sacrifice by selecting this unit, gear, or formation? |
Reassess when the roster or rules change
A squad that worked earlier may no longer cover the same needs after units gain abilities, gear changes, a new mission imposes different constraints, or a game mode alters the rules. XCOM 2’s manual states that classes gain unique abilities and additional abilities as soldiers gain rank, so reassess the actual abilities your roster has rather than relying only on class labels.

- Battle as the powerful Grizzar bears or a massive Guardian! One vs. many asymmetric combat creates a fresh, fun, 2-player experience.
- Not only does the battle occur on the Kingdom board, but the bears must traverse a full size, Guardian gameboard. Each guardian has unique routes and abilities to stop the Grizzar.

- 2 Players / Ages 12+ / 40 Minutes
In XCOM 2, the manual also says soldiers killed in combat are permanently removed from the squad. That makes the consequences of risk and the availability of replacements especially relevant when building for that game. Do not assume the same loss rules apply elsewhere; check the game’s own rules.
