Do not buy a phone that remains Activation Locked.
Before you meet the seller or place an order
For an online listing, ask for clear details about visible damage, battery health, and any Parts and Service History shown in Settings. Check the seller’s return window and what conditions qualify for a return. If the seller describes the phone as certified, ask what the certification actually tests and whether its terms are documented. Apple recommends buying from a reliable seller and understanding the return policy before purchase: Apple’s used-iPhone buying guide.
Inspect the exterior and confirm the phone powers on
- Remove the case and accessories. Check the display, sides, and back for scratches, dents, cracks, or other damage. Look inside the charging connector for damage or debris.
- Power on the iPhone. It may show the Lock Screen, the Hello screen, or “iPhone Locked to Owner.” If it will not turn on, try charging it; Apple advises against buying a phone that will not charge.
- Try a compatible cable if available. Connector type varies by iPhone model, so check the model before bringing a cable. A successful charge test only shows that the phone responds to that test; it does not establish overall battery or device condition.

Make Activation Lock a purchase gate
Do not rely on a seller’s assurance that the phone was reset. The device must be erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account. On iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, an Activation Locked device displays “iPhone Locked to Owner.” If you see that screen, do not take ownership while the lock remains.

- If necessary, ask the seller to unlock the phone and erase it.
- Begin setup and proceed until you can confirm whether the phone asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account.
- If it requests that account, the seller must enter their credentials or remove the device from their account. Do not complete the purchase until the phone can proceed without them.
- Confirm setup reaches the Hello screen. Apple says, “A device is ready for you to use when you see the Hello screen.” See Apple’s Activation Lock instructions.
If a phone bought online arrives showing “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple’s used-iPhone guide says to return it.
Check Parts and Service History without overreading it
Once the iPhone reaches the Home Screen, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. iOS 15.2 and later can display this section when relevant repairs have been recorded, but what appears depends on the model, software, and repaired part. A missing section or an apparently clean history does not prove the phone has never been repaired.

Apple’s current model coverage is not the same for every iPhone: iPhone 12 models and later can show battery, display, logic board, front camera, and rear camera history; iPhone 11 models can show battery and display; iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) can show battery history. Older software may show less. If a part was repaired more than once, only the latest service for that part is shown. See Apple’s Parts and Service History guide.
- Genuine: Apple says the repair used genuine Apple parts and processes. It does not mean the phone was never repaired.
- Unknown: This can mean a non-genuine part, a part that is not functioning as expected, a part that was not verified and linked after repair, or a modified or otherwise unverifiable part. The label alone does not identify which explanation applies.
- Unverified: Apple uses this for a logic board previously used in another iPhone. Apple warns that some functions, such as Apple Pay, may be affected.
- Used: The part was already used or installed in another iPhone.
- Finish Repair: Calibration or repair steps remain incomplete. Apple says Face ID or Touch ID may not work for the relevant parts until repair is completed.
Treat a label as a reason to ask what was replaced, when, by whom, and whether the work has a warranty. The screen reports available history; it is not a complete lifetime repair invoice. Apple’s explanations are in its Parts and Service History guide.

Check battery health and understand what the number means
On iPhone 6 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. In iOS 16.1 and later, the label may appear as Battery Health & Charging. Review Maximum Capacity, important battery messages, and performance-management information if shown. Apple notes that battery-health details may be unavailable for unknown or non-genuine batteries; an “Unable to verify” message means the displayed information may not be accurate. Apple’s design targets are 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles for iPhone 14 models and earlier, and 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles for iPhone 15 models, under ideal conditions. These are not pass/fail rules for every used phone: Apple says actual capacity depends on how the device is regularly used and charged. Lower capacity can mean less time between charges. Battery service cost and availability depend on the model and region; Apple describes service options in its battery and repair information.

Test the functions you depend on
After setup and unlocking, try the following checks. They can reveal obvious problems, but they are not a full technical diagnosis.
- Buttons: Press volume up and down and check the on-screen response. Test the Ring/Silent switch if the model has one, and press the side button.
- Cameras and video: Take photos in bright and low light, check focus, and try any telephoto or ultra-wide cameras on that model. Record a short video and play it back.
- Speakers: Play a ringtone or alert and listen for clear output.
- Microphone: Record a short Voice Memos clip, then play it back.
- Display: Adjust brightness in Settings > Display & Brightness.
- Wi-Fi: Connect to a network if one is available.
Apple’s used-iPhone guide recommends checking these core functions. If you cannot test something important before paying, consider that uncertainty a reason to require a return window or choose another phone.

Decide whether to proceed
Compare candidate phones on the same points: whether setup completes without the seller’s account, exterior condition, repair labels and affected components, battery capacity and whether its reading is verifiable, successful tests of the functions you need, and the seller’s reliability and return terms. If an online phone arrives in a condition that differs from its description, inspect it promptly and use the return terms.
