You can repurpose a compatible Samsung Galaxy as a small desktop or command-line computer, but it is not a drop-in Raspberry Pi replacement. Use Samsung DeX for a monitor-based Android workspace, Termux for command-line tools, or a community rootless Linux desktop for a graphical Linux environment. The right choice depends on your exact phone and what you need it to do.

Choose the right approach for the job

Approach Best for What it runs Main limitation
Samsung DeX Using a Galaxy phone with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse Android apps in a desktop-style interface External display and DeX support vary by phone and mode. Samsung’s compatibility page lists supported devices and exclusions.
Termux Shell commands, scripts, and lightweight command-line tools Android terminal and Linux-like tools hosted by Android It does not turn the phone into a conventional Linux computer or provide general-purpose access to board hardware. Raspberry Pi’s Termux guidance shows a practical starting point.
Rootless Linux desktop Experimenting with a Linux graphical desktop An Arch Linux ARM userspace in PRoot, displayed with XFCE and Termux:X11 This community setup runs under Android and has compatibility limits, especially for attached hardware. The project instructions describe device requirements and setup.

For projects that need Raspberry Pi GPIO pins, Pi-specific drivers, or reliable unattended operation, the phone options described here may not fit. Android remains the host system, and peripheral access depends on the device and software configuration.

Check your Galaxy model before buying accessories

Do not assume that every Samsung phone with USB-C can send video to a monitor. DeX availability, wired or wireless display support, and DeX on PC are model- and mode-dependent. Samsung’s current US DeX compatibility information identifies supported families, exclusions, and software-version limits. Confirm your exact model and software there before choosing a setup.

For a wired DeX workspace, Samsung’s setup guidance describes connecting to an HDMI display and using a keyboard and mouse over USB or Bluetooth. A compatible USB-C hub with HDMI can combine a display connection, charging, and USB accessories, but a hub cannot add video output to a phone that does not support it. Check Samsung’s DeX setup and accessory guidance for supported adapters and connection details.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (8GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

Set up a DeX desktop

  1. Verify DeX support. Check the exact Galaxy model and the DeX mode you plan to use against Samsung’s compatibility page.
  2. Connect the display. For the wired workflow, connect the phone to an HDMI display using an adapter or hub supported for your device, following Samsung’s setup instructions.
  3. Add input devices. Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse or connect supported USB devices, as described in Samsung’s DeX accessory guidance.
  4. Test the apps you need. DeX presents Android apps in a PC-like interface; it does not install Raspberry Pi OS or guarantee that a particular desktop application is available.

DeX is the most direct choice when the goal is to use the phone’s Android apps on a larger screen. It is not equivalent to having a Raspberry Pi’s board-level interfaces.

Use Termux for command-line work

Termux provides an Android terminal and environment for command-line tools. The Raspberry Pi documentation recommends obtaining it from GitHub or F-Droid rather than using the deprecated Google Play build. Its example workflow updates packages, installs Node.js and Git, and grants explicit permission before accessing shared Android storage.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (4GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • CanaKit Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

That can be enough for scripts or lightweight command-line tasks, provided the tools you need run in Termux. Android is still managing the phone’s hardware and processes; Termux is not a native Raspberry Pi OS installation. Test your intended commands and storage access before depending on them.

Try a rootless Linux desktop only if you need one

The community Termux-Desktops project documents an Arch Linux ARM userspace running rootlessly in PRoot, with XFCE displayed through Termux:X11. It can be used alongside Samsung DeX, but it remains a Linux environment hosted by Android, not a replacement operating system installed directly on the phone.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit

The project recommends a 64-bit ARM Android device, current Termux, Termux:X11, at least 5 GB of free storage, and a keyboard and mouse for desktop use. It is independent of Samsung and requests device-specific compatibility reports, so results can vary by phone.

Pay particular attention to USB hardware. The project warns that a device recognized by Android may not appear inside its Linux environment as a conventional device such as /dev/ttyUSB*. If your project depends on a USB serial adapter or another peripheral, verify access in the actual environment before building around it.

Decide whether the phone can replace your Pi project

Compare the phone and a Raspberry Pi against the needs of your specific project—not just whether each can display a desktop or run a shell.

  • External display: Does your exact Galaxy model support the DeX or display mode you need?
  • Software: Do the applications or command-line tools you require run in Android, Termux, or the rootless Linux setup?
  • Attached hardware: Can the environment you chose actually access the required device or interface?
  • Setup effort: Are you comfortable configuring Android tools or troubleshooting a community Linux desktop?
  • Unattended operation: Have you tested the phone and software under the conditions your service needs? The cited documentation does not establish predictable behavior for every long-running service.

For a monitor-based Android workspace, DeX is the straightforward route if your model supports it. For shell tasks, try Termux first. Use the rootless desktop when a graphical Linux userspace is specifically useful and you accept its compatibility limits. If the project relies on GPIO, Pi-specific drivers, or dependable access to attached hardware, keep a suitable Raspberry Pi or other purpose-built board in the plan.
