Make sure the used iPhone is ready for your account
Turn on the used iPhone and begin setup. Apple’s Hello screen indicates that it is ready to be set up. If it opens to a passcode screen or Home Screen, it has not been erased; ask the seller to erase it before you enter your information.
If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, the iPhone is still linked to that account by Activation Lock. Stop there. Ask the seller to enter their credentials or remove the iPhone from their account remotely. Do not take ownership while it remains linked. Apple’s used-device and Activation Lock guidance explains these checks.
Back up your current iPhone and choose a transfer method
Back up the current iPhone before you start, and have the password for your Apple Account available. Apple supports Quick Start, restoring an iCloud backup, and restoring a computer backup through Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Choose based on whether the old phone is available, a backup already exists, and you can keep both phones occupied during a direct transfer.

Transfer with Quick Start
- Connect the current iPhone to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, and unlock it. Place it near the used iPhone while the latter is at setup.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the devices and continue setup.
- Choose direct transfer or the option to download from iCloud, then follow the prompts.
- For direct transfer, keep both devices near each other and connected to power until migration finishes. Transfer time varies with network conditions and the amount of data being moved.
Quick Start setup is supported from another iPhone or iPad running iOS 11 or iPadOS 13 or later. Apple notes that full wireless data transfer requires compatible software versions. Devices enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business cannot use Quick Start to transfer from a current device. Check Apple’s Quick Start instructions if setup does not offer the transfer you expect.

Optional: use a cable if the iPhone models match
A wired transfer is not required. Apple specifies a USB-C Charge Cable when transferring between iPhone 15 or later devices. For a transfer from iPhone 14 or earlier to iPhone 15 or later, Apple specifies a USB-C to Lightning Cable. The correct cable depends on the models; see Apple’s wired transfer guidance.
Restore from an iCloud backup
- Start setup on the erased used iPhone and proceed until the transfer or restore options appear.
- Choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup and sign in to your Apple Account.
- Choose the backup that matches the current iPhone by checking its date and size.
- Keep the iPhone connected while the restore runs. Afterward, leave it connected to Wi-Fi and power as needed so cloud content can finish downloading.
If the used iPhone has already completed setup, Apple says it must be erased before you can restore a backup to it. Follow Apple’s iCloud restore guidance for the restore flow.

Restore from a computer backup
- Connect the used iPhone to the computer that contains the backup.
- Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, depending on the computer and software you use.
- Select the iPhone and choose the option to restore a backup. Choose the correct backup and follow the prompts.
- If the backup is encrypted, enter its password when asked.
Check whether the backup is encrypted before relying on it: Apple says an unencrypted computer backup does not transfer Health and Activity data. Apple’s computer backup and restore guidance covers encrypted backups and restoring them.
Check the used iPhone before erasing the old one
Once setup and restoration have finished, check that the information you rely on is present on the used iPhone. For example, open Photos, Contacts, and Messages; confirm that accounts are available; and check any Health or Activity information you need. App data can behave differently from one app to another, so open important apps rather than assuming every app’s private data transferred.

If you restored an unencrypted computer backup, Health and Activity data will not be included. Purchases associated with more than one Apple Account may require you to sign in to each account to download the content. Apple describes this in its computer restore guidance and iCloud guidance.

Only erase the old phone after you have checked the used iPhone. On iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Erase All Content and Settings. On version 14 or earlier, open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the prompts for your passcode and Apple Account if requested.

If the old iPhone has an eSIM and you are selling or giving it away, choose the option to erase the eSIM profile if prompted. Carrier-specific service transfer steps can vary. Apple says erasing removes content from the device and turns off Find My and Activation Lock; it does not delete content stored in iCloud. See Apple’s preparation guide.
