When home internet stops working, check whether the problem affects one device or the whole home, then restart equipment once and verify your provider’s service status. Avoid factory-resetting the router: a few simple tests can narrow down the cause without erasing settings.
What to do when your internet goes down
- Check power and cables. Make sure your modem or router is plugged in and its cables are firmly connected. Equipment lights differ by model, so use the device or provider guide to interpret them; a light’s color alone is not a universal diagnosis.
- Find out how many devices are affected. Try another phone, computer, or tablet. On a device that cannot connect, confirm it is using your home Wi-Fi network, then disconnect and reconnect to that network. If other devices work, focus on the affected device rather than restarting the router. Be Connected’s home-internet guidance recommends checking the Wi-Fi connection and reconnecting when needed.
- Restart the equipment once. If your provider or manufacturer gives a restart procedure, follow it. For a separate modem and router, Microsoft’s general sequence is to unplug both, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect the modem, wait for its lights to settle, reconnect the router, and give both devices a few minutes to start. If you have a combined modem/router, restart that single device. This briefly disconnects everyone using the network. Microsoft explains that restarting “helps create a new connection to your internet service provider (ISP).” Microsoft’s connection troubleshooting guide provides the steps.
- Test Ethernet if you can. Connect a computer to the router with a network cable. If wired access works but Wi-Fi does not, investigate the wireless connection or coverage. If Ethernet also fails, the problem may involve the modem/router or a connection farther upstream. This test narrows the possibilities but does not prove which component has failed. See Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance and Be Connected’s checklist.
- Check your provider’s local service status. Use the provider’s website or app, or contact support. Check before repeating restarts or considering a factory reset. Any restoration estimate is specific to the provider and incident, and may change; rely on the current local status information.
- Contact support with a clear record. Note when the issue began, whether it is constant or intermittent, which devices are affected, what the equipment lights show, whether Ethernet works, and what you have tried. Ofcom advises customers to tell their provider when the problem started, its pattern, and the checks or fixes already attempted. Ofcom’s guidance explains how to get help with broadband and Wi-Fi problems.
Why Wi-Fi can say “connected” without internet
Wi-Fi connects a device to the home router; it does not, on its own, confirm that the router has a working connection to the internet. Check another device and, if possible, try Ethernet. If just one device cannot reach the internet, investigate its connection first. If all devices fail on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, the fault may be with home equipment or the provider’s service; the tests narrow the issue but do not identify it with certainty.
What the checks can—and cannot—tell you
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| One device fails; other devices work | The affected device or its connection may be the issue. | Confirm it is on the expected Wi-Fi network and reconnect. |
| Wi-Fi fails, but Ethernet works | The wireless connection or coverage may be the issue. | Focus troubleshooting on Wi-Fi rather than the provider connection. |
| Wi-Fi and Ethernet both fail across devices | The problem may involve the modem/router or a connection upstream. | Check the provider’s service status and contact support if needed. |
| Provider confirms an outage | The provider has identified a service disruption affecting the area or connection. | Follow the provider’s current updates; estimates can change. |
These are diagnostic clues, not guaranteed diagnoses. The FCC groups internet-service complaints into distinct categories including equipment, availability, and speed, which can help distinguish the kind of issue being reported. The FCC’s complaint issue descriptions outline those categories.
When to treat it as an emergency
Ordinary home-internet troubleshooting is not a substitute for emergency communications. If an outage creates an immediate danger, use whatever emergency route is available to you. In the United States, the FCC’s complaint form identifies 911 outages and interference with public-safety services or devices as emergency complaint categories. The FCC complaint form describes those categories; follow emergency guidance for your location.
